Description Brian Daniels 2016-07-03 22:08:27 UTC
Description of problem:

I have a system with a Nvidia GTX 970 in a triple-head configuration. I did a clean install of the Fedora 24 KDE spin using the Nouveau driver. After install and logging in, I did a 'dnf update', which also installed the 4.6.3-300.fc24.x86_64 kernel.

Upon rebooting, the screen went black after the mode set occurred. The loading screen and login were never displayed. The system would not display a text console with ctrl-alt-f2. It would still respond to a control-alt-delete and reboot.

Adding nomodeset to the kernel options and removing rhgb and quiet did allow it to bring up the login screen, but KDE then thought I had only one display and would not allow configuration of others.

Rebooting to the previous kernel (4.5.5-300.fc24.x86_64) prevents the issue and KDE sees all three monitors.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
4.6.3-300.fc24.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install 24 KDE spin on a Nvidia GTX 970 system using nouveau
2. 'dnf update' to install 4.6.3-300.fc24.x86_64 kernel
3. reboot

Actual results:
Black screen after mode shift occurs.

Expected results:
Login screen.

I see the same...

Comment 2 florian 2016-08-10 19:39:18 UTC
Still present on 4.6.5-300.fc24.x86_64 kernel.

Comment 3 Jared Sprague 2016-08-12 03:39:17 UTC
I have the exact same issue.

My graphics card:

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM204 [GeForce GTX 970] (rev a1)

Fedora stopped booting for nvidia 970 when kernal 4.6 and greater was released.

Downgrading to Kernel 4.5.5 solves the problem.

*** Bug 1364276 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***

Comment 5 Ilia Guterman 2016-08-12 21:39:56 UTC
It is happening only for GTX 4GB, doesn't reproduce for GTX 2GB version.

So it could be related to the 3.5GB limitation of GTX 4GB.

Comment 6 Orcan Ogetbil 2016-10-08 21:35:12 UTC
I am thinking of upgrading my Fedora 23 to 24.

Does Fedora 24 work fine with kernel 4.5? Or do we have to use proprietary drivers for NVidia?

I am surprised that Linux support for one of the most popular and recent graphics cards is broken for so many months.

Comment 7 Orcan Ogetbil 2016-10-31 00:48:43 UTC
Can we adapt the workaround patch at
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=94990#c78
until the real solution is found?

We won't have Fedora 25 if this fix doesn't make it.

Comment 8 Orcan Ogetbil 2016-11-02 02:12:13 UTC
I built the 4.8.5 locally with the patch linked in my previous message and I confirm that it boots, launches X and works fine.

$ lspci |grep -i nvidia

04:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GM204 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)
$ uname -r
4.8.5-200.fc24.x86_64

Comment 9 Walter Francis 2016-11-26 15:18:25 UTC
Same issue here.. I had to boot with basic graphics, upgrade, install nvidia drivers from RPMFusion, remove nomodeset from grub, etc. Not a simple set of steps, even if documented for users.

Symptoms: Boot from image and as soon as X attempts to start the screen goes black and that's end of story. Only way to install is to boot with basic graphics mode.

Comment 10 Walter Francis 2016-11-26 15:29:55 UTC
This can be changed to Fedora 25 as well, I forgot to mention that. The symptoms appear to be the same.

Comment 11 Orcan Ogetbil 2017-03-08 03:45:19 UTC
It seems that the issue is fixed upstream. Can we backport the patch?

Comment 12 Mike Gahagan 2017-05-01 18:14:02 UTC
I have a system affected by this and can test fixes if needed.

Comment 13 Orcan Ogetbil 2017-07-11 02:13:10 UTC
kernel-4.12 seems to fix the issue. Is there a chance it will make it to Fedora 25?

Comment 14 Fedora End Of Life 2017-07-25 21:33:02 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 24 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 2 (two) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 24. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '24'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 24 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 15 Yann Golanski 2017-08-01 14:01:13 UTC
I am guessing that the "fix" was not ported to the 4.11 kernel?

In that case, updating to F25/26 is still impossible without manually installing the nouveau driver and messing about settings in grub… Did I get that right?

Comment 16 Orcan Ogetbil 2017-08-01 14:12:59 UTC
Correct. I was able to upgrade from F24 to F25 using dnf, grab an SRPM from koji, locally build the kernel-4.12 RPM on F25 in text mode, then boot into it graphically.

Comment 17 Orcan Ogetbil 2017-09-21 03:14:06 UTC
I guess this bug can be marked fixed now that the kernel-4.12 is available for F25. I don't have a F25 box to test. 4.12 boots fine on F26 with the same hardware.
