Description of problem: The Fedora Scala packages are stuck at version 2.10.4, that is more than 2 years old (March 2014, see http://scala-lang.org/news/2.10.4 ). This affects all the packages of the Scala stack in Fedora, e.g. Scala's build tool 'sbt' that depends on it. To give you an idea of how "old" that is, there are already Scala books whose code examples cannot work on 2.10.x, e.g. O'Reilly's "Programming Scala", 2nd edition. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): scala noarch 2.10.4-8.fc23
Same issue with Fedora 24, the latest Scala package is 2.10.4-9.fc24.
It would be great if scala would be updated to the current version, 2.12.1.
Gianfranco and Edgar, we're actively working on bringing Scala 2.11 (and ultimately 2.12) to Fedora. It is a difficult job to bring Scala in line with Fedora packaging requirements, since the build process is complicated and since many of Scala's build dependencies are also difficult to bring into Fedora. (Once we have 2.11 and a recent sbt in Fedora, I suspect 2.12 will be easier than 2.11.) For now, we have 2.10 in Fedora because when we updated Fedora's Scala support as part of the work of the Big Data SIG, none of the upstreams we were interested in supported 2.11. In any case, I bumped the Scala package late last year and it is now at 2.10.6, so I'm closing this bug since that is the most recent version of Scala 2.10. When we add Scala 2.11 and Scala 2.12 they will most likely be separate packages.
Will, thank you for your explanation! Please, can you put a note here when packages with other names (for 2.11 od 2.12) are available (because then package scala is not updated automatically when there is a new package name)?
Edgar, yes, I should be able to do that. Thanks for understanding!
