Description Ralf Corsepius 2016-08-13 06:28:50 UTC
Description of problem:

Since ncurses was upgraded to ncurses-6.0-6.20160709,
invoking "reset" displays this behavior:

# reset
[001B]104

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xfce4-terminal-0.6.3-9.fc24.x86_64
ncurses-6.0-6.20160709.fc24.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install ncurses-6.0-6.20160709.fc24.x86_64
and xfce4-terminal-0.6.3-9.fc24.x86_64
2. Launch an xfce4-terminal
3. invoke "reset"

Actual results:
See above.

Additional info:
- with ncurses-6.0-5.20160116.fc24 installed, xfce4-terminal does not exhibit this behavior.
- xterm and gnome-terminal do not expose this behavior.

I noticed this as well. I think this is best reported upstream ..

Perhaps, you can try this build as well -

As far as I can see it's not fixed with this build, but please give it a try anyway.

I rebuilt xfce4-terminal-0.6.90-1.fc26 for f24 from Fedora's git master.

You are right, a simple "dnf update" doesn't not seem to fix this issue, but after logging out and re-logging in, this issue appears to be fixed.

Note that that version includes the move to gtk3 and vte291, so it's likely quite different.

which leads me to wonder if it's a good idea to update to F24.

But, I am running 0.6.90 with no problems so I am inclined to update ... did you notice any issues that would make it a bad update, kevin? Ralf?

This is difficult to answer for me. Actually, this all started with me facing "a few" "graphics"- related problems with xfce4/fc24, which all seem to have started around the time ncurses-6.0-6.20160709.fc24.x86_64 was introduced to fc24. Some of these seem to be directly connected to ncurses (Like this one), but others appear not to be connected to ncurses/xfce4-terminal.

To cut a long story short: I am observing further issues with xfce4-terminal and I am observing further, more general graphics issues with fc24, but I don't know their causes nor do I know if xfce4-terminal-0.6.90 introduces new ones.

E.g. one issue I am currently facing with xfce4-terminal-0.6.90 is kind of an occasional "flicker", which I assume to be unnecessary, multiple terminal-redraws. Unfortunately, I can't deterministically reproduce them :(

There is a similar report for terminator (using old vte) in bug #1363792.

Comment 7 Kevin Fenzi 2016-08-15 16:47:22 UTC
So, the only downside I've seen so far with the new xfce4-terminal was mentioned on the upstream list: If you have transparent terminals they show the contents of any terminal behind them, but not the desktop background (as it did before).
This is a gtk3 change and unlikely to get fixed it sounds like...

So, I'd be ok pushing to stable releases and leaving a extra long time in updates-testing to try and see any bugs.
