Description Kirill Berezin 2016-08-16 14:25:21 UTC
Description of problem:
Last thing i can see - starting notification "application request additional software". When i installed "gstreamer-plugins-ugly" issue disappeared.
Gnome freezing for 5-7 minutes, no matter if i kill "soundc". Then it reports about crash.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-desktop3-3.20.2-1.fc24.x86_64
kernel-4.6.6-300.fc24.x86_64
soundconverter-2.1.6-2.fc24.noarch

How reproducible:
Fresh install F24, install soundconverter without any additional packages (but with rpmfusion connected). Try to convert mp3->ogg on high insane preset.

Actual results:
Gnome session freezing, and not responding. I could move my mouse but that's it. First time i thought VirtualBox hook my input, but then it turns gnome just ignoring any command.

Expected results:
Soundconverter flashing "required component missing" or Gnome-software opening and offering install additional package. System stays fine.

Additional info:

Comment 1 Michael Schwendt 2016-12-17 00:06:07 UTC
Soundconverter at Fedora seems to be broken completely for some time. It looks like nobody has tested it anymore.

This particular problem is fully reproducible with F25, where the GStreamer plugin installation requests flood GNOME Shell with endless requests.

There is also this error when starting Soundconverter in a terminal, which looks like new breakage in gstreamer-python:

$ soundconverter
SoundConverter 2.1.6

(gst-plugin-scanner:21822): GStreamer-WARNING **: Failed to load plugin '/usr/lib64/gstreamer-0.10/libgstpython.so': /usr/lib64/gstreamer-0.10/libgstpython.so: undefined symbol: PyList_Insert

Comment 2 Michael Schwendt 2016-12-17 00:40:00 UTC
> undefined symbol: PyList_Insert

That's an old one -> bug 1276442

Try to get that fixed, then see what else in Soundconverter may still need an investigation.

Comment 3 Michael Schwendt 2016-12-25 22:33:13 UTC
Steps to reproduce:

 1) rpm -e gstreamer-plugins-ugly
 2) soundconverter -d
 3) add MP3 file and convert to something else

GStreamer 0.10 backend triggers "missing plugin" installation,

  ** Message: PackageKit: xid = 0
  ** Message: PackageKit: desktop_id = (null)
** Message: PackageKit: Codec nice name: MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) decoder
** Message: PackageKit: ignoring field named parsed
** Message: PackageKit: field is: mpegversion, type: gint
** Message: PackageKit: field is: layer, type: gint
  ** Message: PackageKit: structure: gstreamer0.10(decoder-audio/mpeg)(mpegversion=1)(layer=3)()(64bit)

but there is an immediate callback with GST_INSTALL_PLUGINS_SUCCESS, and since the plugin is still missing, a seemingly endless loop back of trying to get the plugin is started. Meanwhile, disk massacre, and GNOME Shell displays tons of notifications about the plugin installation requests, locking up if not managing to kill Soundconverter.

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2017-07-25 22:27:54 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 24 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 2 (two) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 24. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '24'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 24 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2017-08-08 16:34:19 UTC
Fedora 24 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-08-08. Fedora 24 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
