Red Hat Bugzilla 1053882 0 unspecified CLOSED /etc/ssl/certs not compatible with OpenSSL 2021-12-07 18:53:57 UTC

Internal Links: 1053882

Description Florian Reisenhofer 2016-11-20 13:09:13 UTC
Description of problem:

I've tested this on two games so far, both which use SSL to connect to their servers.
https://steamcommunity.com/app/252950/discussions/0/350541595105773736/?ctp=2

To connect to any server in Rocket League, you need to
ln -s /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt /etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt

Borderlands 2 is hardcoded to look at /usr/lib/ssl (Default Ubuntu behaviour), so you need to
ln -s /etc/ssl /usr/lib/ssl

Actual results:

Game doesn't find certificate file and cannot connect

Expected results:

Game works and lets me connect to server

Additional information:

This might not be the correct place to report this bug, as it seems it's also related to the OpenSSL package.

Comment 1 Adam Williamson 2017-05-10 20:06:14 UTC
The patch I wrote for #1053882 looks like it's probably still just about right for this, it would need trivial re-diffing against the current ca-certificates spec file however.

For an awful lot of background on this, see:

https://www.happyassassin.net/2015/01/12/a-note-about-ssltls-trusted-certificate-stores-and-platforms/

the games here are technically bad actors, if there's any viable mechanism for sending feedback / bug reports for them, you might want to hit them with that link :)

Comment 2 Fedora End Of Life 2017-11-16 18:47:34 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 25 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 25. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '25'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 25 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 3 Fedora End Of Life 2017-12-12 10:29:24 UTC
Fedora 25 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-12-12. Fedora 25 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 4 Fedora End Of Life 2018-02-20 15:27:00 UTC
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 28 development cycle.
Changing version to '28'.

I still don't think the changes I suggested in 1053882 have been done.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 34 development cycle.
Changing version to 34.

Comment 13 Bob Relyea 2021-12-06 23:55:53 UTC
I've now picked up the patch Adam williams suggested in bug 1053882, which provides for the main link requested in the bug. I'm loathed to proliferate all the possible directories old applications would look in for certificate trust, so I'm not picking up the link from /usr/ssl/certs. /etc/ssl/certs has a longer history and anything that can't handle it, should be using our standard links.

Comment 14 Adam Williamson 2021-12-07 00:48:57 UTC
Thanks!

I'm Adam Williamson, not Adam Williams. No Adam Williamses wish to be blamed for my engineering. :D
