Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Orion Poplawski 2016-11-21 20:42:20 UTC
Description of problem:

DEBUG util.py:421: Error: Package: hypre-mpich-devel-2.11.1-4.el7.x86_64 (build)
DEBUG util.py:421: Requires: mpich-devel(x86-64)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
3.0.4-10.el7

Comment 1 Orion Poplawski 2016-11-21 20:47:29 UTC
This is a regression from 7.2:

# repoquery --whatprovides mpich-devel'(x86-64)'
mpich-devel-0:3.0.4-8.el7.x86_64

Comment 2 Yaakov Selkowitz 2016-11-21 23:38:40 UTC
Note that mpich-3.0-devel does provide mpich-devel, just not the mpich-devel%{?isa} explicitly required by hypre-mpich-devel in the spec.

Comment 3 Orion Poplawski 2016-11-21 23:48:43 UTC
True, but the arch specific version is what should be used according to the Fedora packaging guidelines:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Packaging:Guidelines#Package_dependencies

The 3.0.4-10.el7 package I'm looking at does, but that gets obsoleted.

The instability of RHEL MPI packages is a huge pain for anyone trying to run a
typical HPC service using them.

Comment 5 Antonio T. (sagitter) 2016-11-30 20:32:13 UTC
No solution for this issue?

Comment 6 Orion Poplawski 2016-11-30 20:44:52 UTC
Well, in the immediate term - hypre needs to change the requires, assuming that it will take a while to get this fixed in RHEL7. Something like:

%if 0%{?el7}
Requires: mpich-devel
%else
Requires:       mpich-devel%{?_isa}
%endif

should do the trick.

Also a possibility - one might want to build both mpich-3.0 and mpich-3.2 versions.

I'll leave these up to Dave.

I don't object to trying to work round problems, but why would this apply only to hypre? It won't help unless petsc and any other relevant packages change.

Also any mpich packages rebuilt now won't install on CentOS/SL 7 systems as far as I can see.

Comment 8 Orion Poplawski 2016-12-01 15:45:41 UTC
Because hypre is the only package that (correctly) requires mpich-devel%{?_isa} rather than just mpich-devel:

# repoquery --whatrequires mpich-devel
blacs-mpich-devel-0:2.0.2-15.el7.x86_64
ga-mpich-devel-0:5.3b-14.el7.x86_64
ga-mpich-static-0:5.3b-14.el7.x86_64
gasnet-devel-0:1.28.0-1.el7.x86_64
hypre-mpich-devel-0:2.11.1-4.el7.x86_64
mpich-doc-0:3.0.4-8.el7.noarch
netgen-mesher-mpich-devel-0:5.3.1-5.el7.x86_64
scalapack-mpich-devel-0:2.0.2-15.el7.x86_64
# repoquery --whatrequires mpich-devel'(x86-64)'
hypre-mpich-devel-0:2.11.1-4.el7.x86_64

Comment 9 Fedora Update System 2016-12-02 13:36:01 UTC
hypre-2.11.1-6.el7 has been submitted as an update to Fedora EPEL 7. https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2016-30fb5f975e

Actually petsc does too, but that list suggests plenty of missing dependencies.

Anyhow, I've pushed the hypre update to testing (and will keep it there until it will install on CentOS/SL).

Does 'petsc' need this fix?

yes
