OK, very embarrassed here. I READ THE ONLINE HELP (doh), which simply states that you can create templates from documents that you frequently create... create an empty document and save it in a folder called Templates in your home directory, and it will appear on the desktop menu. In order to save a little bit of face, I would still suggest that maybe some basic templates be included in the menu.
