RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Florence Blanc-Renaud 2016-12-14 08:36:55 UTC
Description of problem:
The Linux Domain Identity, Authentication, and policy guide should explicitely state that IPv6 is a requirement and should not be disabled.
This could be added in 2.1.2. System Requirements https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/7/html/Linux_Domain_Identity_Authentication_and_Policy_Guide/installing-ipa.html#prerequisites

More information here on the rationale:
https://www.redhat.com/mailman/private/freeipa-users/2015-September/msg00175.html

Disabling IPv6 can cause this type of issue:

Comment 1 Aneta Šteflová Petrová 2016-12-14 09:34:05 UTC
IPv6 is enabled by default in RHEL 7. Under normal circumstances, it shouldn't be necessary to list default settings in requirements.

We are dealing with IPv6 also in BZ#1393278. In this BZ, I proposed adding a troubleshooting section with advice on what to do if installation fails on a system with IPv6 disabled. What do you think - would a troubleshooting section like this be enough, instead of adding IPv6 to the list of requirements?

I can always add the requirement as you proposed - it wouldn't be a problem. I just want to make sure it really makes sense in this case.

Hi Aneta,

In reply to your question in #c1, I find it best to add the requirement in the System requirements. I agree that IPv6 is enabled by default on RHEL but we do support IdM with non-default configurations (otherwise the admin couldn't customize his system at all).

It's always better to clearly state the expectations IMHO. Also, IPv6 is always required, not only during installation.

Comment 5 Aneta Šteflová Petrová 2016-12-14 13:28:01 UTC
Thank you for the additional details, Flo. I'll add this to the prerequisites section as you proposed in c#0.

Comment 6 Aneta Šteflová Petrová 2017-01-02 10:05:43 UTC
I added the following item to the System Prerequisites section:

---------
IPv6 must be enabled on the system

Installing and running an IdM server requires IPv6 to be enabled on the network. Note that IPv6 is enabled by default on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 systems.

If you disabled IPv6 before, re-enable it as described in How do I disable or enable the IPv6 protocol in Red Hat Enterprise Linux? in Red Hat Knowledgebase.
---------

The update is now available on the Customer Portal.
