Description Chris 2017-02-12 00:56:58 UTC
Description of problem:

Android phones allow you to tether internet via USB by pretending Ethernet network card. As a source of the internet you can choose Mobile Data or WiFi (then phone acts as a gateway from its own WiFi to the USB).
Unfortunately after connecting you phone NetworkManager will reconfigure the phone to act as a modem showing Mobile Broadband instead of Cable connection.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
1:1.4.4-3.fc35

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Connect your Android phone to WiFi
2. Connect your phone to the Fedora PC
3. Enable USB tethering in your phone
4. Observe new Cable Connection in NM's applet
5. Observe after several seconds Cable connection is gone and Mobile broadband is present

Actual results:
Mobile broadband connection is present as phone is configured as modem

Expected results:
Phone should not be configured as modem when it is already acting as Ethernet card

Additional info:
It looks like a problem with configuration. On my second Arch machine with installed gnome and NM this problem dosen't exist as I haven't installed Mobile broadband support.

Comment 1 Fedora End Of Life 2017-11-16 19:21:56 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 25 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 25. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version'
of '25'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 25 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 2 Fedora End Of Life 2017-12-12 10:23:58 UTC
Fedora 25 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2017-12-12. Fedora 25 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 3 Yannick Defais 2019-05-01 21:20:52 UTC
I have the very same issue with fedora 29/30.

Here is my workaround :
$ systemctl stop ModemManager

After I stopped the service ModemManager, there is no more trouble : just plug the Android phone in and "it just works".

Thus, for some reason, NetworkManager automated configuration is wrong as it use the phone as a modem by default and this does not work.

Comment 4 Alex Richert 2019-11-04 15:25:14 UTC
Still present in F31.

Comment 5 Bogdan Vatulya 2020-10-03 06:41:51 UTC
Still present on Fedora 32
