Description Stefano Biagiotti 2017-03-23 14:51:32 UTC
Description of problem:
mcelog generates the following message:
   mcelog: warning: 16 bytes ignored in each record
   mcelog: consider an update

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
mcelog-137-1.fc25.i686
kernel-PAE-4.9.14-200.fc25.i686

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Run mcelog as a daemon at boot (default).

Actual results:
mcelog: warning: 16 bytes ignored in each record
mcelog: consider an update

Expected results:
No warnings.

Additional info:

Seems to be similar to bug 507026.

Using kernel-PAE-4.10.4-200.fc25.i686 from updates-testing, I see a slightly different message:
   mcelog: warning: 24 bytes ignored in each record
   mcelog: consider an update

Comment 1 Pierguido Lambri 2017-04-05 10:51:40 UTC
I get the same on a x86_64 machine:

mcelog: warning: 24 bytes ignored in each record
mcelog: consider an update

kernel-4.10.8-200.fc25.x86_64
mcelog-137-1.fc25.x86_64

Comment 2 GroovieMan 2017-07-03 09:11:15 UTC
I have the same issue on my CPU N3450 64Bit Celeron:

$ /usr/sbin/mcelog --cpu broadwell
mcelog: warning: 24 bytes ignored in each record
mcelog: consider an update

$ cat /proc/version:
...
Linux version 4.11.7-200.fc25.x86_64
...

$ rpm -q -f /usr/sbin/mcelog
mcelog-137-1.fc25.x86_64

Comment 3 Henrique C. S. Junior 2017-07-13 21:50:38 UTC
Any update regarding this issue?

Comment 6 GroovieMan 2017-07-29 08:02:50 UTC
The owner of that impact should increase the priority and severity, otherwise nothing will change.

This impact does make it hard to analyse kernel issues with the new intel proc-architecture.

Comment 7 Stefano Biagiotti 2017-08-02 15:52:38 UTC
Priority and severity fields aren't editable. Not by me, at least.

Comment 8 Gene Snider 2017-08-17 22:01:49 UTC
Same problem here on fc25 with Ivybridge CPU. According to koji, mcelog-137 was built from git on 2016-05-26 23:10:57 for fc25. It's been rebuilt by releng ever since for succeeding releases. According to https://github.com/andikleen/mcelog/issues/1, this issue was fixed upstream in November of 2016. Please update mcelog to current upstream.

Thanks,
Gene

Comment 9 Gene Snider 2017-08-20 19:56:07 UTC
I tweaked the spec file from the fedora mcelog-137 srpm, downloaded the latest release, v153, from https://github.com/andikleen/mcelog/releases, and built a new rpm with rpmbuild. This issue is resolved by the current upstream version. Here's the spec file diff:

$ diff mcelog-137.spec mcelog-153.spec

v153 fixes this problem. I will update to that version.

Comment 13 Gene Snider 2017-08-21 19:20:54 UTC
I'd be happy to test it, but I'm running fc25. Any chance of building this for fc25 and fc27?

Salut,

i tested the updated version and the problem disappeared on my
