See, https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-panel/issues/494#issuecomment-303292435 Can you please check all desktop files in /usr/share/applications/ ? If you find a file which contains a line like this Icon= (icon without a value), please remove this line. I could reproduce the issue with installing 'ggz-gtk-client' Those application ships a desktop file with such a culprit line. Now upstream have a chance to find out why mate-panel crashes if something is wrong in a desktop file. And thanks to the reporter from upstream report which gave us those important infos without starting whining or getting personal if manitainers can't reproduce the issue directly.
I did not find a .desktop file which contains only Icon= Maybe i overlooked one - do you have a regex which i could use for grep or any other command to verify i did not oversee one? I dont know why you repeat with this "whining or getting personal". If you feel upset because i told you how it feels to me when playing pingpong instead of directly saying what i should do, then something goes very wrong. If thats the case then please tell me, because then i will simply ignore all that and live with the bug and stop further reporting/commenting. Then it is not constructive and wasted time.
Every time you answer i feel it was a mistake to spend my free time to fix your problems.
mate-panel-1.18.2-3.fc26 has been submitted as an update to Fedora 26. https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2017-a841a33682
This is really not my intention. I just try to follow core protocols. I will try to update these days and see if it fixed the problem - thanks.
Note, you will see the issue again if you update mate-panel, because the old version is running. But with new version the issue should be fixed if you run 'dnf/yum update'. I tested it several times in different installation after i found a reproducer.

Seems like that really made it. Updated now 3 times with dnf update and no crash - which happened all the time before the mate-panel update. Thanks!
I made a couple of updates now and the crash never happened again. This ticket can be closed - thanks for your effort!
