It would be great if we can have a more recent version of "par2" in Fedora. For example 0.7.x allows storing the parity information separately from the actual data.

Agreed. I've just started working on it. Upgrade to 0.7.x is a big change to the structure of the code-base so I have to pay more attention to every detail.
