Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description prasun.gera 2017-05-02 05:36:01 UTC
Description of problem:

Statically linking with -lpthread leads to the following link time warning:

/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/4.8.5/../../../../lib64/libpthread.a(libpthread.o): In function `sem_open':
(.text+0x6823): warning: the use of `mktemp' is dangerous, better use `mkstemp'

This looks like the same bug as https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=14327, which according to the website is fixed in glibc 2.18

Can the fix be backported to RHEL 7.x ?

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
ldd --version
ldd (GNU libc) 2.17

How reproducible:

Not sure. I don't have too many programs with static -lpthread to test

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Use -static in LDFLAGS

Actual results:
Warning

Expected results:
No warning

Additional info:
Looks like the same issue as https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=14327

Comment 2 Florian Weimer 2017-05-02 07:41:01 UTC
Note that static linking of glibc is not supported in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (glibc-static is in the optional channels).

Comment 3 prasun.gera 2017-05-02 08:05:51 UTC
It looks like https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1349962 is also related.

Comment 4 prasun.gera 2017-05-02 08:11:02 UTC
From the patch at https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2013-01/msg00574.html, "mktemp is no longer in POSIX, and this also avoids the link warning when linking -lpthread statically."
