RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Red Hat Product Errata RHBA-2017:1905 0 normal SHIPPED_LIVE Xorg X11 server and drivers bug fix and enhancement update 2017-08-01 16:03:51 UTC

Description Peter Hutterer 2017-05-31 01:11:18 UTC
Description of problem:
The rebase to wacom 0.34 brought in the change to the pressure range from 2048 steps to 65536 steps. Some applications hardcode the previous 2048 instead of fetching it from the XInput axis ranges and now have only a fraction of the pressure range available. This makes the tablet unusable in those applications, but the ones that are affected appear to be mainly proprietary applications that cannot be updated easily by the customer.

This is a bug in the application, but it will most probably affect some of our customers and they probably cannot update the application.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-drv-wacom-0.34.0-1.el7 and above

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Plug in a wacom tablet with the xorg-x11-drv-wacom driver assigned
2. xinput list <device id or device name>
3. Check the third valuator for the pressure range, it should show 0 to 65536
4. xinput test-xi2, then touch the window with the stylus, observe the third valuator's values

If set to 65536, the ranges will quickly go above 2048 even at low pressure. An application that expects a maximum of 2048 will thus not be able to use the pressure value.

Additional info:
This has been reported upstream: https://sourceforge.net/p/linuxwacom/mailman/message/35857403/ and in bug 1401655#c3

Suggested solution for RHEL7.4 is to provide a compatibility option for customers affected by this issue. The workaround has been tested by a user affected by this issue (in CC of this bug).

MODIFIED

xorg-x11-drv-wacom-0.34.2-2.el7 is available in brew

Comment 13 Michael Boisvert 2017-06-27 18:13:56 UTC
Tested on kernel-3.10.0-687.el7 and xorg-x11-drv-wacom-0.34.2-2.el7, the 27QHD stylus now works at full pressure in Gimp and I was able to properly reproduce Peter's instructions using the 27QHD. The correct tip pressures are represented within xinput test-xi2 before and after the custom .conf file is added.
