Description Greg Scott 2017-05-31 22:07:33 UTC
Currently, if I update a template, and I want VMs based on that template to get the update, I need to destroy and recreate those VMs.

This RFE asks for the ability for VMs based on an updated template - or at least pooled VMs based on that template - to automatically have that update at the next boot, with no need to destroy and recreate the VMs.

Consider the use case with thousands of Windows VMs, all with unique identities and members of an Active Directory domain. If I patch their template, I need to destroy all those VMs, clean references to them from AD, recreate them, and run them all through a Microsoft mini-setup to rejoin the domain.

If RHV had the ability to patch the template *once*, with all VMs based on that template immediately receiving the update after a reboot, customers could save significant time and money with patch management for both servers and desktops.

This RFE does not ask for updates to copy out to thousands of VM disk images. It asks for thousands of VMs to share the same template image, even after a template update.
