Description of problem: UP Board SBC will not boot current 4.11.3 kernel from Fedora 25 updates. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 4.11.3 How reproducible: Boot the system from power on and select 4.11.3 kernel from boot menu. System freezes immediately with blank screen and no response to keyboard or mouse. Power off and than power on is required to restart system. Steps to Reproduce: 1.Power on system 2.Select 4.11.1 kernel, or if it is the first selection, do nothing and wait for the timeout. 3.System freezes with blank screen. Actual results: Blank screen after selecting the specific kernel from the boot menu. Expected results: Scrolling of text indicating that the boot process is continuing. Additional info: System is an UP Board SBC (Single Board Computer) with 4 GB of memory and 64 GB of eMMC. See http://up-shop.org/up-boards/44-up-board-4gb-ram-64-gb-emmc.html This system boots from the eMMC. I have been running this board as a server starting with Fedora 24 and now with Fedora 25. It has worked with all kernels from these distributions until I install this new 4.11.3 kernel.
A type-pos: The kernel version here is 4.11.3, not 4.11.1.
I installed the new kernel-4.11.3-202.fc25.x86_64 package and rebooted. Received the same failed result: system freezes after selecting the kernel at boot time. Here is the output from lsmod running the 4.10.17-200.fc25.x86_64 kernel: $ lsmod Module Size Used by rpcsec_gss_krb5 36864 0 nfsv4 565248 3 dns_resolver 16384 1 nfsv4 nfs 245760 5 nfsv4 fscache 65536 2 nfsv4,nfs cfg80211 602112 0 rfkill 24576 2 cfg80211 nf_log_ipv6 16384 1 ip6table_mangle 16384 0 ip6table_filter 16384 1 ip6_tables 28672 2 ip6table_mangle,ip6table_filter nf_log_ipv4 16384 3 nf_log_common 16384 2 nf_log_ipv6,nf_log_ipv4 xt_LOG 16384 4 xt_limit 16384 1 xt_conntrack 16384 13 xt_nat 16384 1 iptable_mangle 16384 0 iptable_nat 16384 1 nf_conntrack_ipv4 16384 15 nf_defrag_ipv4 16384 1 nf_conntrack_ipv4 nf_nat_ipv4 16384 1 iptable_nat nf_nat 28672 2 xt_nat,nf_nat_ipv4 libcrc32c 16384 1 nf_nat nf_conntrack_ftp 20480 0 nf_conntrack 131072 6 xt_nat,nf_conntrack_ftp,nf_conntrack_ipv4,xt_conntrack,nf_nat_ipv4,nf_nat vfat 20480 1 fat 69632 1 vfat usblp 20480 0 intel_rapl 20480 0 intel_powerclamp 16384 0 coretemp 16384 0 kvm_intel 200704 0 kvm 593920 1 kvm_intel irqbypass 16384 1 kvm crct10dif_pclmul 16384 0 crc32_pclmul 16384 0 ghash_clmulni_intel 16384 0 intel_cstate 20480 0 snd_usb_audio 184320 3 wdat_wdt 16384 0 snd_usbmidi_lib 28672 1 snd_usb_audio snd_hwdep 16384 1 snd_usb_audio snd_intel_sst_acpi 16384 0 snd_rawmidi 32768 1 snd_usbmidi_lib snd_intel_sst_core 77824 1 snd_intel_sst_acpi snd_soc_sst_mfld_platform 102400 1 snd_intel_sst_core snd_soc_sst_match 16384 1 snd_intel_sst_acpi snd_soc_core 233472 1 snd_soc_sst_mfld_platform mei_txe 20480 0 mei 102400 1 mei_txe lpc_ich 24576 0 snd_compress 20480 1 snd_soc_core shpchp 36864 0 snd_pcm_dmaengine 16384 1 snd_soc_core ac97_bus 16384 1 snd_soc_core snd_seq 65536 0 snd_seq_device 16384 2 snd_seq,snd_rawmidi snd_pcm 102400 4 snd_usb_audio,snd_pcm_dmaengine,snd_soc_sst_mfld_platform,snd_soc_core snd_timer 32768 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm intel_hid 16384 0 dw_dmac 16384 0 snd 77824 17 snd_compress,snd_hwdep,snd_seq,snd_usb_audio,snd_timer,snd_rawmidi,snd_usbmidi_lib,snd_seq_device,snd_soc_sst_mfld_platform,snd_soc_core,snd_pcm sparse_keymap 16384 1 intel_hid i2c_designware_platform 16384 0 soundcore 16384 1 snd i2c_designware_core 20480 1 i2c_designware_platform spi_pxa2xx_platform 24576 0 pwm_lpss_platform 16384 0 pwm_lpss 16384 1 pwm_lpss_platform tpm_crb 16384 0 tpm_tis 16384 0 tpm_tis_core 20480 1 tpm_tis int3400_thermal 16384 0 tpm 40960 3 tpm_tis,tpm_crb,tpm_tis_core dptf_power 16384 0 int3403_thermal 16384 0 acpi_thermal_rel 16384 1 int3400_thermal int3406_thermal 16384 0 int340x_thermal_zone 16384 1 int3403_thermal acpi_pad 180224 0 binfmt_misc 20480 1 nfsd 339968 13 auth_rpcgss 61440 2 nfsd,rpcsec_gss_krb5 nfs_acl 16384 1 nfsd lockd 94208 2 nfsd,nfs grace 16384 2 nfsd,lockd sunrpc 335872 31 auth_rpcgss,nfsd,rpcsec_gss_krb5,nfsv4,nfs_acl,lockd,nfs i915 1449984 6 mmc_block 36864 5 i2c_algo_bit 16384 1 i915 drm_kms_helper 155648 1 i915 crc32c_intel 24576 1 drm 352256 8 i915,drm_kms_helper r8169 81920 0 mii 16384 1 r8169 fjes 73728 0 sdhci_acpi 16384 0 sdhci 45056 1 sdhci_acpi video 40960 2 int3406_thermal,i915 mmc_core 139264 3 sdhci,mmc_block,sdhci_acpi uas 24576 1 usb_storage 69632 1 uas
Same issue based on Mainboard "asrock fatal1ty z68 professional gen3". The system boots from SSD.
Recently upgraded from Fedora 24 to 25 and ran into same issue with Asrock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 with BIOS 2.20 (most recent from 2012). Xeon E3-1230v2 CPU. If I remove "quiet" from the boot parameters, only the line "Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok" appears. A blinking cursor appears directly below it and boot goes no further. nouveau is blacklisted. Previous kernels 4.8.6-300.fc25.x86_64 and 4.10.10-100.fc24.x86_64 boot without issue. There's also a recent support question on fedora question related to the kernel version and nouveau, which may be conflating multiple issues, but another user "nullcat" responding to thread posted his lspci which was similar to my hardware. We both have "Xeon E3-1200" processors. https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/106433/kernel-panic-in-4113-using-nouveau-driver/ My hardware: $ lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/Ivy Bridge DRAM Controller (rev 09) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor PCI Express Root Port (rev 09) 00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family MEI Controller #1 (rev 04) 00:1a.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #2 (rev 05) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 05) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 (rev b5) 00:1c.4 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 5 (rev b5) 00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 6 (rev b5) 00:1c.6 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 7 (rev b5) 00:1c.7 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 8 (rev b5) 00:1d.0 USB controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller #1 (rev 05) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation P67 Express Chipset Family LPC Controller (rev 05) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family 6 port Desktop SATA AHCI Controller (rev 05) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family SMBus Controller (rev 05) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 [GeForce GTX 1060 6GB] (rev a1) 01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1) 03:00.0 SATA controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88SE9120 SATA 6Gb/s Controller (rev 12) 04:00.0 USB controller: Etron Technology, Inc. Hello, I have the same problem on the UP-board SBC with fc25 kernel 4.11.8-200.fc25.x86_64, and also with the pre-release of fc26 beta 1.4 (which implies that the live CD is not booting).
I've managed to get the output of the serial port while booting the UP Board. I got this kernel error: [ 0.000000] Linux version 4.11.8-200.fc25.x86_64 (mockbuild.fedoraproject.org) (gcc version 6.3.1 20161221 (Red Hat 6.3.1-1) (GCC) ) #1 SMP7 [ 0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.11.8-200.fc25.x86_64 root=/dev/mapper/fedora-root ro rd.lvm.lv=fedora/root rd.lvm.lv=fedora/swap console=t8 [ 0.000000] x86/fpu: x87 FPU will use FXSAVE [ 0.000000] e820: BIOS-provided physical RAM map: [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000000000000-0x000000000008efff] usable [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000000008f000-0x000000000008ffff] ACPI NVS [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000000090000-0x000000000009dfff] usable [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000000009e000-0x000000000009ffff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000000100000-0x000000001effffff] usable [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000001f000000-0x00000000201fffff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x0000000020200000-0x000000005b128fff] usable [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000005b129000-0x000000005b158fff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000005b159000-0x000000005b17cfff] ACPI data [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000005b17d000-0x000000005b74efff] ACPI NVS [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000005b74f000-0x000000005ba80fff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x000000005ba81000-0x000000005bffffff] usable [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000e0000000-0x00000000e3ffffff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fea00000-0x00000000feafffff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fec00000-0x00000000fec00fff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fed01000-0x00000000fed01fff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fed03000-0x00000000fed03fff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fed06000-0x00000000fed06fff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fed08000-0x00000000fed09fff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fed1c000-0x00000000fed1cfff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fed80000-0x00000000fedbffff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000fee00000-0x00000000fee00fff] reserved [ 0.000000] BIOS-e820: [mem 0x00000000ffc00000-0x00000000ffffffff] reserved [ 0.000000] NX (Execute Disable) protection: active [ 0.000000] efi: EFI v2.40 by American Megatrends [ 0.000000] efi: ESRT=0x5b157000 ACPI=0x5b160000 ACPI 2.0=0x5b160000 SMBIOS=0x5b909f18 [ 0.000000] SMBIOS 2.8 present. Thanks for the serial output. This seems like it might be related to bf7696a12071 ("acpi: lpss: call pwm_add_table() for BSW PWM device") ?
Hi, (In reply to Laura Abbott from comment #7) > Thanks for the serial output. This seems like it might be related to > bf7696a12071 ("acpi: lpss: call pwm_add_table() for BSW PWM device") ? Ack, I think this is caused by the UP board having both its PWM controllers enabled, the Baytrail code path from which I copied this likely has the same issue, but there are probably no boards with both PWM controllers enabled. I will try to create a patch fixing this tomorrow. Regards, Hans
Created attachment 1294736 [details] ACPI / LPSS: Only call pwm_add_table for the first PWM controller Ok so I decided to just go ahead and whip up a patch right away. Laura can you perhaps do a test-kernel build with this patch added for the reporter to test ?
Thank you very much! I'll try to compile the kernel with this patch myself if you'd like?
Hello, Question: which kernel version does this patch apply to? I've installed kernel-4.11.8-200.fc25.src.rpm but there's no function called "byt_pwm_setup" in acpi_lpss.c. Thanks!
Hi, (In reply to Joel Stienlet from comment #11) > Hello, > Question: which kernel version does this patch apply to? I've installed > kernel-4.11.8-200.fc25.src.rpm but there's no function called > "byt_pwm_setup" in acpi_lpss.c. Thanks! Its against 4.12, for 4.11 you can just drop the hunk of the patch which is touching byt_pwm_setup. Regards, Hans
The patch is working, the kernel boots again :) Thank you very much Hans and Laura! Best regards, J.Stienlet
(In reply to Joel Stienlet from comment #13) > The patch is working, the kernel boots again :) > Thank you very much Hans and Laura! Great, thank you for testing. I've submitted the patch upstream now.
Is a patched packaged version of a kernel with this patch fix going to be available soon? I only ask because it has been some years since I recompiled a kernel. It is not that I am not unwilling to recompile the kernel, but it will be very much a relearning experience for me. The other issue in my mind is will this patch be included in the release of Fedora 26?
In the meantime you can download my version (4.11.8 fc25) from google drive: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-qaF4FonWwLTlpuYXlhUGoza0k (be careful, I haven't inserted anything nasty, but you only have my word for it...)
(In reply to Joel Stienlet from comment #16) > In the meantime you can download my version (4.11.8 fc25) from google drive: > https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-qaF4FonWwLTlpuYXlhUGoza0k > (be careful, I haven't inserted anything nasty, but you only have my word > for it...) Joel I appreciate the offer, but no thank you. The Up-Board is a production system and I need to be careful. In any case, I need to learn again how to compile kernels. :-)
(In reply to Hans de Goede from comment #14) > (In reply to Joel Stienlet from comment #13) > > The patch is working, the kernel boots again :) > > Thank you very much Hans and Laura! > > Great, thank you for testing. I've submitted the patch upstream now. I have just finished my own process of patching, compiling and installing a version of the 4.11.8 kernel with this patch. I can report success booting the UP Board with this patched kernel. I have no new problems to report and can only hope that some version of this patch makes it into the final iteration of Fedora 26. Thank you for your help.
I put the patch into the tree. It should show up in 4.11.10 which is scheduled to be released from upstream Wednesday and available in Fedora sometime shortly afterwards.

The 4,11.10 kernel is apparently not included on the Cinnamon install ISO and is maybe not present on any of the other Fedora 26 installs. is there an easier way to install Fedora 26 without having to do something like a dnf distro-sync on top of an install of Fedora 25?
Hello Bill, I'll try to make a custom install dvd with pungi and tell you if it worked. That will not be easier if you only have one to install, but definitely faster if you have a bunch of them.

Joel, Thanks for the suggestion. Pungi is a new app for me, but I am going to try it out. I have a few of these Up Board SBCs and I need to have a way to install Fedora 26 if the user wants to do so. Google is a worthless search engine sometimes in finding such tools....
