FreeType was disabled "to prevent the need for libcguittfont.so", but I think this has been fixed since version 0.4.14.[1] Therefore, it is not necessary to keep -DENABLE_FREETYPE=FALSE. Enabling FreeType means Minetest can use vector fonts.
