Description Ben Rosser 2017-10-13 16:23:07 UTC
Spec URL: https://tc01.fedorapeople.org/ocaml/opam/opam.spec
SRPM URL: https://tc01.fedorapeople.org/ocaml/opam/opam-2.0.0-0.2.beta4.fc26.src.rpm

Description: Opam is a source-based package manager for OCaml. It supports
multiple simultaneous compiler installations, flexible package constraints, and
a Git-friendly development workflow.

Fedora Account System Username: tc01

This replaces the previous (dead) review for opam.

The only dependency currently missing from Fedora Rawhide is ocaml-cmdliner.

The unit tests didn't run when I built the package in copr, so I've turned them off for now. (They worked fine when I built locally using rpmbuild).

I've updated to the latest upstream release, and decided to split opam-installer out into a subpackage. This way packages that want to be built using jbuilder only have to BR opam-installer instead of the full opam package.

Comment 4 Andy Li 2017-11-30 03:44:33 UTC
I noticed there are two files licensed in LGPLv3+ instead of LGPLv2+.
I asked upstream to upgrade everything to LGPLv3+
https://github.com/ocaml/opam/issues/3125
I think it is good to change the spec License field to LGPLv3+ anyway since v3+ is valid for v2+.

For %check, I can reproduce the `make tests` failure in mock. I've also dump the test log at https://gist.github.com/andyli/39c567d847439ebb752ca3d14e91d037
I can't tell why did it fail either.
Would you check to see if the tests pass outside mock? If not, we have to ask upstream.

Turn out there is reasons for using LGPLv2+. Let's wait for upstream's response in https://github.com/ocaml/opam/issues/3125

Comment 6 Andy Li 2017-11-30 09:31:13 UTC
Alright, resolved. Please apply https://github.com/ocaml/opam/commit/e3b5576d2cab0b44ec146f5da706b762bcb538b4.patch as patch and keep the license field as v2.

Comment 7 Ben Rosser 2017-12-04 23:00:06 UTC
Hm... the tests were passing previously for beta4 on F26, but I just attempted to run them locally on Fedora 27 (since ocaml-re is only available for Rawhide at the moment, I have a build of it and dose3 here: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/tc01/ocaml-utils/), and now they also fail.

https://paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/5NyR0-5GGvaxZRa0ZHt9FQ

I'll have to look into more detail later, but at first glance it looks like something to do with the internal solver is broken.

Comment 8 Ben Rosser 2017-12-04 23:53:21 UTC
Oh, nevermind. The build of ocaml-mccs on F27 is also out of date, that appeared to have been the issue. (I guess I should set up a Rawhide VM, or something).

When I updated mccs, the unit tests all passed.

So it looks like some sort of mock-specific failure.

I'll apply the license patch momentarily and upload a new SRPM.

- Add upstream patch correctly indicating LGPLv2 license of a few files.

Comment 10 Andy Li 2017-12-05 06:02:48 UTC
Package accepted. Thanks for the testing!

Be aware that there is a OCaml 4.06 update going on, and there are some packages need to be rebuilt on rawhide, so building opam may fail if a dep hasn't rebuilt yet. Just make sure to do a scratch build before the actual build.

Comment 11 Richard W.M. Jones 2017-12-05 11:36:14 UTC
(In reply to Ben Rosser from comment #8)
> (I guess I should set up a Rawhide VM, or
> something).

This would be a good idea actually, since Rawhide is now on OCaml 4.06
which has significant changes due to the safe-string default.

You don't actually need to set up a full VM however. In practice you can
just pick the Rawhide packages for Fedora 27:

# dnf install feora-repos-rawhide

Make sure that ‘enabled=0’ everywhere in /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-rawhide.repo,
otherwise you'll get Rawhide packages for everything which you don't usually want.

Then do:

# dnf update --best ocaml\* --enablerepo=rawhide

Make sure you check the package selection before confirming installation, in case
you accidentally upgrade major Rawhide components which (depending on your
tolerance for the bleeding edge) might not be a good idea.

Comment 12 Ben Rosser 2017-12-13 16:22:14 UTC
Thanks for the review!

I've imported and built the package in Rawhide.

Comment 13 Andy Li 2018-01-12 04:49:18 UTC
Ben, would you submit opam to f26 and f27 as well? I have a few packages that want to be made available there.

Comment 14 Ben Rosser 2018-01-12 16:23:49 UTC
Unfortunately it's not quite that simple. First, ocaml-re would need to be built for earlier Fedora versions; it's currently only in master (https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/ocaml-re). Rich would need to do this; I don't have ACLs on the package. (dose3 would also need to be built for the earlier releases, once re is available).

After that... I wasn't able to compile the latest opam release on F26, so I think I would need to build a slightly older version (beta3 or beta4). I think there's a similar situation on Fedora 27 but I'm not sure.

Is it just ocaml-re or other packages? I'll send a request for branches
for ocaml-re only for now.

Comment 16 Richard W.M. Jones 2018-01-12 18:29:06 UTC
I see you mentioned ocaml-dose3 too. I have requested f26 & f27
branches for both packages, but AFAIK it may take some time for
those requests to be processed.

Comment 17 Richard W.M. Jones 2018-01-15 14:50:32 UTC
I have now created ocaml-re & ocaml-dose3 branches for f26 & f27
and done all 4 builds:

https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2018-c56b4822b3
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2018-043eee3c5e

https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2018-88034d4413

If you want to build against these packages before they go into
stable, you will need to request build overrides via
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/overrides/new

Thanks, Richard!

Ben: It would be great to have opam on at least f27. If there is any build issue, upstream need to be notified too.

Great, thanks Richard! I'll look into building opam sometime this evening.

The failures seemed to have something to do with a combination of jbuilder + ocaml versions. Or at least, this was my assumption given that things still worked on Rawhide.

opam-2.0.0-0.5.beta6.fc27 has been submitted as an update to Fedora 27. https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2018-9248f0bdff

opam is built for F27. Building for F26 may take a bit longer as the updates for dose3 and re only just got pushed to testing.

While we appreciate Fedora packaging opam, please do note that the opam2 beta series is still subject to backwards-incompatible changes until we release opam 2.0.0. When do you anticipate Fedora 27 being released?

We would rather not have to support opam2 betas in the long term, so perhaps a warning message in the RPM to this effect might be appropriate?

Comment 24 Richard W.M. Jones 2018-01-23 18:17:16 UTC
F27 was released in November 2017. F28 will be released in May.

We can push updates including complete new versions to Fedora 27 until
EOL so I don't think there's any problem here.

Oh that's perfect, thanks! We're working hard on getting opam2 out of the door :-)
