Did you check older kernels, did 5GHz work there ? Please provide output of "lspci -vnn" as text file. Some 3160 devices are 11n only, so let check if you do not have one of those.

Hi Stanislaw attached is the file you requested. sorry for the late reply, as I was on PTO for a week. still have the same issue on latest version of kernel uname -a Linux satellite 4.14.16-300.fc27.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Jan 31 19:24:27 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux 5GHz worked well when Fedora 27 was GA and I installed on my laptop. Also had no issue with 5GHz on Windows 10 Home edition, which was installed on the laptop.
Alex, the device you have should be 11ac capable. Would be good if you could tell us the kernel version of Fedora 27 GA so we would know where regression happened. CC Intel folks, perhaps they have fix for this problem already.
Hi Stanislaw Fedora 27 GA should have been shipped with kernel 4.13 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fedora_version_history Not sure about the specific version, but maybe kernel-4.13.0-1.fc27? Per https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/?packages=kernel&page=4
Alex, could you download some 4.13 kernel (it can be 4.13.4 kernel from https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=976639 ) install it via "rpm -ivh --force" and confirm 5GHz works there ?
Hi Stanislaw I tried: 4.14.18-300.fc27.x86_64, same issue then tried: 4.15.3-300.fc27.x86_64, same issue tried the old kernel: uname -a Linux satellite 4.13.4-300.fc27.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Sep 28 17:02:21 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux - same problem I still see this rpm -qi iwl3160-firmware.noarch Name : iwl3160-firmware Epoch : 1 Version : 25.30.13.0 Release : 82.fc27 Architecture: noarch Install Date: Wed 10 Jan 2018 08:34:26 AM CET Group : Unspecified Size : 10428225 License : Redistributable, no modification permitted Signature : RSA/SHA256, Fri 05 Jan 2018 05:09:23 PM CET, Key ID f55e7430f5282ee4 Source RPM : linux-firmware-20171215-82.git2451bb22.fc27.src.rpm Build Date : Fri 05 Jan 2018 02:03:16 PM CET Build Host : platform-eng.bos.redhat.com Relocations : (not relocatable) Packager : Fedora Project Vendor : Fedora Project URL : http://www.kernel.org/ Summary : Firmware for Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 3160 Series Adapters Description : This package contains the firmware required by the Intel wireless drivers for Linux. So this seems to be firmware regression. You can downgrade to older firmware by removing firmware image file and reload driver. If /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode is the newest 3160 image do this: mv /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode.old modprobe -r iwlmvm modprobe iwlmvm Driver should load older firmware image then and you can check if 5GHz works.
Hi Stanislaw no luck, now my Wi-Fi is gone, showing it Unavailable. I cannot see even the 2.4GHz. I have renamed the file back to iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode, rebooted the laptop, but no hope.
Alex, you can use dmesg console command to see what happened, most likely you used newer kernel i.e. 4.15 which do not support older firmware. Please try use 4.13 kernel with removed -17 ucode.
I Stanislaw I booted on 4.13 kernel now uname -a Linux satellite 4.13.4-300.fc27.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Sep 28 17:02:21 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Followed your instructions regarding iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode, i.e. mv /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode.old modprobe -r iwlmvm modprobe iwlmvm still not working. dmesg shows: [ 281.052670] Intel(R) Wireless WiFi driver for Linux [ 281.052671] Copyright(c) 2003- 2015 Intel Corporation [ 281.053213] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode failed with error -2 [ 281.053215] iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: no suitable firmware found! Hi Stanislaw good news is I got my WLAN card working again bad news, only on 2.4 GHz. even if I had kernel 4.13.4-300.fc27.x86_64 I could see only the 2.4GHz WLAN. disabling iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode causes the errors I mentioned in my previous post iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: Direct firmware load for iwlwifi-3160-17.ucode failed with error -2 iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: no suitable firmware found! iwlwifi 0000:03:00.0: iwlwifi-3160-17 is required rfkill list 0: Toshiba Bluetooth: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 3: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 4: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no

Perhaps this is regulatory issue. Could you check 'iw reg get' and see if 5GHz channels are listed there? Also could you check "iw phy" output, does it show the device support 5GHz channels ?
Please also do 'dmesg > dmesg.txt' and attach dmesg.txt file here.

Both "iw phy" and "iw reg" said that 5GHz is supported. It's hard to tell why your router 11ac network is not visible. Could you check if 5GHz channel configured on the AP is within range of 5GHz channels from above commands ? Please also attach output of "iw dev wlp3s0 scan" .

Hi I can connect to the 5GHz WLAN on same router with 3 different Android phones (Sony and Samsung) Maybe I have a faulty WLAN card, but it works on 2.4GHz... attached the required output.
*********** MASS BUG UPDATE ************** We apologize for the inconvenience. There are a large number of bugs to go through and several of them have gone stale. Due to this, we are doing a mass bug update across all of the Fedora 27 kernel bugs. Fedora 27 has now been rebased to 4.17.7-100.fc27. Please test this kernel update (or newer) and let us know if you issue has been resolved or if it is still present with the newer kernel. If you have moved on to Fedora 28, and are still experiencing this issue, please change the version to Fedora 28. If you experience different issues, please open a new bug report for those.
I have F28 and still same issue, even with latest Kernels. Go ahead and close this , as I believe I have a faulty WLAN card, as Stanislaw tested this on a laptop with same card and 5GHz band worked there. thanks Alex
Sorry to hear about the faulty hardware, but thanks for the update.
Hi guys, Fedora 29 + Thinkpad T430 , the same issue as above. Both networks are visible ( 2,4GHz and 5GHz) but I can connect only to 2.4. Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10 works properly.
Hi, seriously doubt it's Alex's hardware. We have a customer with a lot of Lenovo G50 and Z50 laptops with the card and the exact same issue. The fact that they work and connect fine on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS seems definite proof it's not the hardware to me. Our customer has confirmed that, even as the previous poster Bogumił. Please reopen. I'm awaiting kernel logs from our customer and will attach them once received.

Fedora uses unmodified upstream drivers and firmware. It would be useful to compare kernel and frimware versions with Ubuntu and to try to downgrade the kernel/firmware packages to match what Fedora has. Also your chances of getting some help with this are better if you file a bug with the upstream iwlwifi developers, see: https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/iwlwifi/debugging
I reopened in bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1651989 Hans: Do you want to pick this up in the new bug, or remain in this one (still has status closed / cantfix and from what I just read it might not be possible to reopen if errata was supplied)? Alex: if you still have the hardware (and the issue), would it be possible for you to test with Ubuntu 18.04.1? Live version from DVD/USB should suffice (no need to install). In any case I can fairly easy determine if the firmware differs. Will do that shortly, kernel itself might be another story however. Not a low-level programmer and not well versed with all the stuff that might be related to it.
Hi all Yes, I still have the issue. Have Fedora 29 with latest kernel: 4.19.2-300.fc29.x86_64 I thought it was a hardware issue, because I did had an issue with charging cable on the laptop, and had to open it and replace it myself. But I had the Wi-Fi card working on Fedora for sure. I will try the Unbuntu 18.04.1 when I will have a chance and let you guys know. Probably during the weekend...
(In reply to Ferry from comment #29) > I reopened in bug: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1651989 Ok, since this bug is quite old, it is probably best to continue this in that bug. I'll comment further there.
All looks like my old laptop doesn't like Unbuntu. :( I downloaded the image, burned the ISO with different programs, tried different USB flash disks, but couldn't get that thing to work. I can choose the image, no errors on the disk, I get the Unbuntu logo, but the installation just hangs after a while. Sorry, but I am not going to install it on my personal laptop, replace Fedora 29, just to test this... I am running Fedora 29 on it, with all updates installed, and see just 2.4GHz WLANs with the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160 card installed on it.
