screenshot of the console showing kernel panic

Centos6 host machine, with a Fedora KVM virtual machine. The VM has
worked properly up to and including 4.14.8-300.fc27. Yum updated it to
4.14.11-300.fc27, which panics very early in the boot process.

How reproducible: 100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Build a Fedora VM in a Centos6 host machine
2. Yum update to latest 4.14.11-300.fc27 kernel
3. panic

Actual results: panic

Expected results: should boot and run normally

Additional info: screen shot attached. Booting the 4.14.8-300.fc27 kernel
from the grub menu works.

Comment 1 Laura Abbott 2018-01-09 16:38:45 UTC
Can you boot the guest with nopti and see if that makes a difference?

Comment 2 Carl Byington 2018-01-09 17:28:37 UTC
That works. Thanks!

Comment 3 Laura Abbott 2018-01-09 17:44:31 UTC
Thanks for testing. Fixes for KPTI are still trickling in. Fedora hasn't pushed 4.14.12 yet and 4.14.13 is due to come out on Wednesday so I think testing that would be a good first step before reporting this further.

Comment 4 Laura Abbott 2018-01-11 18:19:33 UTC
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2018-21a7ad920c can you please test this kernel update and see if it boots as expected?

Comment 5 Carl Byington 2018-01-12 17:43:22 UTC
4.14.13-300 still fails to boot. It does work with nopti added to the kernel boot line.

Comment 6 Laura Abbott 2018-01-12 18:56:30 UTC
Reported upstream, can you attach a full console log via the VM serial console?

Comment 8 Laura Abbott 2018-01-12 20:12:07 UTC
Thanks for the panic. Can you give the rest of the console log as well?

Comment 9 Carl Byington 2018-01-12 20:26:23 UTC
I am not sure how to get that. From a bash prompt, I "virsh console vpn25". From virt-manager, I add "console=tty0 console=ttyS0" to the kernel line and boot. The console output starts with the PANIC line.

[root@xx log]# virsh console vpn25

Comment 10 Laura Abbott 2018-01-12 21:10:37 UTC
Can you try removing quiet from the kernel command line? That usually gets added to most standard installs.

Comment 11 Carl Byington 2018-01-12 21:19:23 UTC
Ah, that gives a bit more:

Can you boot with nopti and post the output of:

$ cat /proc/cpuinfo

from inside the VM?

Comment 13 Andy Lutomirski 2018-01-13 06:09:33 UTC
I'm quite confident that we'll find that pcid is not in the list of features. The kernel code is bogus, as described in the lkml thread. Your kernel is dying here:

.Lwrcr3_\@:
/* Flip the PGD and ASID to the user version */
        orq $(PTI_SWITCH_MASK), \scratch_reg
        mov \scratch_reg, %cr3

as expected, since the code in question is wrong.

https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=24181514 Can you test this scratch build, it has a proposed fix.

Comment 16 Carl Byington 2018-01-14 16:43:40 UTC
That one works - boots normally with no manual additions to the kernel args. Thanks!

Comment 17 jonnyfahrenheit 2018-01-18 16:04:18 UTC
I'm getting this too on a fedora 26 guest in an ovirt 3.4 environment, kernel version for guest - 4.14.13-200

However, this kernel works ok for guests on a hosting server with this cpu signature:-

Signature: Type 0, Family 6, Model 44, Stepping 2 (X5650, Dell Poweredge r710)

The problem hosting server cpu being:-

Signature: Type 0, Family 6, Model 15, Stepping 7 (X5355, Dell Poweredge 2950)

   Thanks...

Jonny

I'm also having a similar problem on 27.
I log into KDE then my laptop touchpad stops working and that this error pops up. My mouse does not get to work until another restart, but the same keeps happening. I resort to a usb mouse.
