Description of problem: It looks like commandline tools such as 'lpr', 'lpq', 'lpstat' don't use the $PRINTER or $LPDEST environment variables any more. If no printer is specified on the commandline, print jobs go to the default printer set up on the system. Documentation (such as the man pages of these commands) still refer to the environment variables as the first source of determining the default. So, either the commands have a bug, or the documentation is out of date. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): cups-client-2.2.4-6.fc27.x86_64 Additional info: As a workaround, I recommend users use 'lpoptions -d printername' to set their default printer. However, there are many reasons why a per-session default from the environment is preferable over a per-user default (e.g. if a user logs in somewhere else in the network or using x2go, they may want to use another convenient printer, without messing with the default set for their logged in desktop environment).
Hi David, thank you for reporting this issue. It is the bug in commands, it is fixed in cups-2.2.6, which is in rawhide (F28), I'll backport fix for this issue.
