Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because
the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description of problem:
The help message of specific udevadm commands contains option --version, which is working. It only works if it is written right after udevadm (udevadm --version command) not after (udevadm command --version)
But in man page this option is described as it works (only mentioned with udevadm and "udevadm info", but not with other subcommands).
There is one command "udevadm test" which writes the version, but exit with error message that it doesn't recognize option --version
Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
systemd-219-57.el7.x86_64
How reproducible:
always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. check help message for each command eg. 'udevadm trigger -h'
2. search option "--version"
3. try to run command with version option 'udevadm trigger --version'
Actual results:
---------working commands----------
# udevadm --version
219
# udevadm info --version
219
--------non-working commands-------
# udevadm trigger --version
trigger: unrecognized option '--version'
#udevadm settle --version
settle: unrecognized option '--version'
#udevadm control --version
control: unrecognized option '--version'
# udevadm monitor --version
monitor: unrecognized option '--version'
# udevadm test-builtin --version
calling: test-builtin
test-builtin: unrecognized option '--version'
command missing
udevadm builtin [--help] COMMAND SYSPATH
...PRINT REST OF HELP MESSAGE
--------mixed behaviour ------------
# udevadm test --version
calling: test
version 219
test: unrecognized option '--version'
Expected results:
fix the functionality :
I would prefer this solution:
if this option should NOT be accepted then remove it from help message and fix the functionality of command "udevadm test" which print the version before it exit with error message
if this option should be accepted then accept it with all commands, maybe it would be nice to add this option to man page to each command
Additional info:
To make this report clear:
# man udevadm
...
udevadm info [options] [devpath|file]
...
--version
Print version.
...
We should remove the --version subargument from the manpage, since it's nonsense.
