Description of problem: Keyboard and touchpad randomly stop working after resuming from sleep. However, the touchscreen (if it is present on your laptop) keeps working. Restarting or powering off and powering back on fixes the problem. I first encountered this issue in Fedora 27 but since 28 was just round the corner, I figured I'd upgrade and try it out for a couple of months before filing a bug. Have been running into this very frequently. Ran into it twice today! My laptop uses the i8042 controller so following a couple of other issues, I tried setting i8042.reset=1 in my GRUB config but that didn't work either. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): libinput 1.11.2-1.fc28.x86_64 How reproducible: Random Steps to Reproduce: 1. Put laptop to sleep by closing lid 2. Bring laptop back from sleep opening lid Actual results: Keyboard and touchpad don't work. Expected results: Keyboard and touchpad should work. Additional info: Kernel version: 4.17.4-200.fc28
This is most likely the lid switch being unreliable, or libinput not handling it correctly. Can you run libinput debug-events --verbose > events.log in screen please, suspend/resume and when the bug triggers, please attach the log here. Thanks.
I'll set up the logging and attach the file when I reproduce it, thanks!
Created attachment 1470941 [details] Output from libinput --debug-events Attaching the libinput logs as requested. Please note that I had to attach an external keyboard in order to log in and reboot.
The libinput logs look correct. If you have an external keyboard already, can you please reproduce and then run "sudo libinput record" (from libinput-utils) while the internal keyboard is broken? Select the "AT Translated.. keyboard" device and type something - do you see events? If not then the issue is with the kernel/hw. If you do see events then it is libinput after all. Same goes for the touchpad - do you see events with libinput record?
Ah I've already restarted my laptop. I'll try to reproduce it again and attach the additional info.

Created attachment 1471418 [details] Output from libinput record for touchpad Just managed to reproduce the error and look at libinput events. I do see events for both the keyboard and the touchpad. Attaching the logs here.
Just to confirm, the recording is from *after* the error occurred, i.e. when the keyboard/touchpad were already dead. If so, then we have a libinput bug, I'll see if I can augment it so we at least get some more info here.
Yes the recording is after I resumed from sleep and found that the keyboard and touchpad were unresponsive. I attached an external keyboard to get these logs. They keyboard logs are from the internal keyboard. Let me know if I can provide any more info, thanks!
Same bug, running 4.17.9-200.fc28.x86_64 on Dell Inspiron 13.
So, uhm, this is strange. The libinput debug-events log shows that the lid is paired with the keyboard and the touchpad event10 - lid_switch: activated for DELL0740:00 06CB:7E7E Touchpad<->Lid Switch event0 - lid: keyboard paired with Lid Switch<->AT Translated Set 2 keyboard Then the touchpad is suspended and resumed: event10 - lid: suspending touchpad -event0 SWITCH_TOGGLE +4.57s switch lid state 1 event10 - lid: resume touchpad event0 SWITCH_TOGGLE +9.18s switch lid state 0 This basically means: libinput looks like it's working correctly. I double-checked things again and we don't actually do anything with the keyboard events in the lid case - except forcibly restore the lid to "open" when we get keyboard events. So if anything, typing on the keyboard should restore the touchpad events. We never suspend the keyboard during lid switches. You see events in libinput record when they devices are dead in the session so this means the kernel still sends the events but libinput doesn't see them or process them. I'll need some more info to narrow this down: - run sudo libinput debug-events --verbose in screen, capture the output. suspend/resume, type on the internal keyboard and use the touchpad after. When they are not working in the session, do you see events here? If not, attach the log, maybe it contains something interesting - run sudo libinput record on the keyboard *before* suspend and leave it running until resume. Does it still see events after resume? - does logging out and logging back in fix the issue? This creates a new libinput context on the new session so things should be fixed - does systemctl restart gdm.service fix the issue? This *definitely* creates a new libinput context because it stops your current session and restarts gdm, thus any libinput leftovers are gone - Wayland vs Xorg - same issue when you switch between the session types? - Do you have anything else using libinput running? libinput-gestures or something? - attach the journal from across one of the broken suspend/resume cases, maybe a device doesn't come back up properly?
Sure thing, I'll try to reproduce and add all this info. Thanks again!
(In reply to ahmed.najamansari from comment #12) > Sure thing, I'll try to reproduce and add all this info. Thanks again! I update BIOS, since then issue didn't come back , but it random issue so I don't really know if that solve the problem. (In reply to Peter Hutterer from comment #11) In my case both scenarios: logout/login, systemctl restart gdm.service didn't solve the issue.

BIOS update also didn't solve it.
Did have the same problem after fresh install of Fedora 28,then I installed Fedora 27, no problems worked fine untill updating 90 or so MBs, then no more keyboard! found an advice to downgrade a few things: sudo dnf downgrade libebitdo libdfu fwupd storaged libstoraged libinput and miracle it works, so I carefully did new updates with out including those files, and it works, but I thought to test it, and updated those files one by one, and it is in updating the: libinput, that my keyboard stoped fonctioning again, and worked again after doing a: sudo dnf downgrade libinput Results taking place only after a log-out log-in, or reboot. my system is single-booted on an Asus vivobook flip TP412UA manufacturd July 2018 running Fedora 27 kernel: 4.17.17-100.fc27.x86_64 Intel© Core™ i3-8130U CPU Had posted a comment on bug 1436636 but most probably to late, looks like the same problem to me!? Best regards to all, alpenrise
See Comment 11, I still need the data requested there otherwise I can't do much.
Apologies for the radio silence. I didn't run into this bug again until today and it came out of the blue so I hadn't set up logging on libinput. I tried restarting gdm.service but when I tried logging in after the restart, my laptop kind of got stuck? I waited for sometime and then did a hard power off/on. Will try to reproduce with logging set up.
So I have it actively happening right now and tried to run through all the instructions as best I can right now, buy my sleeping pill is kicking in hard. First few things to note. 1) The recording is definitely picking up the key presses even while its not working 2) logging out did not do anything - neither did switching from wayland to xorg 3) restarting gdm.service *temporarily* fixed it, for like... 10 seconds? 4) switching to a different virtual console works - keyboard works in the virtual console - but still does not work in gnome. 5) the function keys that are paired to laptop functions, like brightness are working, at least since restarting the gdm.service. I'm pretty sure they didnt do that before. They are showing up under events as event10. I did a bunch of recordings, some from gnome and some from a virtual console, that I can look through later.
1) indicates that this is *not* kernel issue but higher level which basically makes it either a libinput issue or an issue in the compositor 2) and 3) indicates that it is *not* a libinput or compositor issue but a kernel issue. Yeah, you read that right... My only next guess now is that maybe the device sends some event that confuse libinput and make it shut down or otherwise ignore the keyboard. Hopefully the libinput debug-events output has some info here.
I have a similar issue, except it has nothing to do with suspend or hibernate, the built in keyboard and touchpad stop working as soon as gdm starts. The machine is an Asus TP412UA.
As another datapoint for the TP412UA missing built in keyboard events, I built libinput v1.8.0 myself. When built by autotools, libinput debug-events works, but libinput-debug-events doesn't. When built by meson, neither works.
it turns out that my problem is the tablet switch misbehaving, thus disabling the internal keyboard and touchpad.

I'm still having this issue with an up-to-date F29 on a Dell Inspiron 13-5378 (same as Lev Epshtein from comment #10) with the exact same symptoms as described in comment #22 (except I didn't try gdm).
correction: I meant the symptoms described in comment #20
I found out reloading the module intel_vbtn restores touchpad & keyboard functionalities after they have broken during suspending. To get the keyboard working again this module needs to be reloaded when another tty is in the foreground (reloading it when the tty where Xorg is running is in the foreground only restores touchpad functionality).
I've been able to reliably induce the keyboard and touchpad breakage by turning the laptop upside down while suspending, So I'm guessing the breakage is (also) related to (one of the) gyro modules.
Reverting this commit prevents the keyboard/touchpad breakage: [2/4] platform/x86: intel-vbtn: support SW_TABLET_MODE https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10041093/
