RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description of problem:
Live merge fails on vdsm

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
vdsm-4.20.34-1.el7ev.x86_64
libvirt-3.9.0-14.el7_5.6.x86_64
qemu-kvm-rhev-2.10.0-21.el7_5.4.x86_64
kernel 3.10.0-862.6.3.el7.x86_64
rhvm-4.2.5.1-0.1.el7ev.noarch

How reproducible:
Always, only on block based domain

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a VM from a template as thin copy with disk on iSCSI domain
2. Start the VM
3. Create and attach to the VM 4 disks on iSCSI
4. Stop the VM, create a snapshot (snap0) with all disks and conf and start the VM
5. Stop the VM, create a snapshot (snap1) with all disks and conf and start the VM
6. Stop the VM, create a snapshot (snap2) with all disks and conf and start the VM
7. Delete snapshot snap2

Actual results:
Live merge fails in vdsm:

Expected results:
Live merge should succeed

Additional info:
Marking as a regression as this is a tier1 test case that passed up until this build.

Comment 1 Elad 2018-07-20 11:50:48 UTC
Some clarifications:

- The bug reproduces only when there are file system on the VM disks with some content written to files on them. So in steps to reproduce, step3, create FS on the disks after attaching them to the VM.
- Correction: in steps to reproduce, step7, snapshot 1 has to be deleted, instead of snapshot2

Comment 2 Ala Hino 2018-07-22 14:08:05 UTC
Using the following steps I wasn't able to reproduce:

1. Create a VM and install rhel 7.5 (using an iso that was downloaded)
2. Create a template
4. Create a VM from the template
5. Create 4 disks on a block storage
6. Create FS on all disks
7. Write data to all disks
8. Create a snapshot (s1)
9. Write data to all disks
10. Create a snapshot (s2)
11. Write data to all disks
12. Create a snapshot (s3)
13. Write data to all disks
14. Live merge s2

==> Works as expected.

I proceeded and successfully live merged that other two snapshots, s1 and then s2.

Comment 3 Eyal Shenitzky 2018-08-01 10:48:02 UTC
Managed to reproduce with the following steps:

1. Create a VM with 1gb preallocated disk
2. Create a template from the VM in step 1
3. Create a new VM [WORK_VM]from the template in step 2
4. Add 2 preallocated 1gb disks to WORK_VM
5. Create 3 snapshots to WORK_VM [snap1, snap2, snap3]
6. Run WORK_VM on an !!HSM host!!
7. Remove snapshot snap2

Reproduce at 90%

Comment 6 Eyal Shenitzky 2018-08-07 05:02:51 UTC
Peter,

I suspect that there is a Libvirt bug that causes this error.

Can you please take a look at the libvirtd.log that Elad just added?

Comment 7 Eyal Shenitzky 2018-08-08 11:00:40 UTC
Elad, is this bug occurs also in 4.1?
Can you please check what was the last libvirt version that the flow worked properly?

Comment 8 Peter Krempa 2018-08-08 11:22:38 UTC
I've looked at the logs and found following:

libvirtd was instructed to do a block-commit operation. We've sent the following command to qemu:

2018-08-06 12:09:38.887+0000: 6674: info : qemuMonitorSend:1076 : QEMU_MONITOR_SEND_MSG: mon=0x7f86d8027cc0 msg={"execute":"block-commit","arguments":{"device":"drive-ua-b3fae703-ab91-4364-9efa-4240e7977835","top":"/rhev/data-center/mnt/blockSD/ca5552b7-305a-4667-9688-a42c180806ff/images/b3fae703-ab91-4364-9efa-4240e7977835/e6d99e41-3c8a-4f84-8e50-225c4e15e1b8","base":"/rhev/data-center/mnt/blockSD/ca5552b7-305a-4667-9688-a42c180806ff/images/b3fae703-ab91-4364-9efa-4240e7977835/12f6a3a3-b7bc-41c8-aa1f-2741348c928d","backing-file":"12f6a3a3-b7bc-41c8-aa1f-2741348c928d"},"id":"libvirt-153"}^M

... and never received a reply.

All subsequent APIs then got errors as there was an active API call. Note that block-commit operation is asynchronous after the command is acknowledged by qemu (which it was not):

2018-08-06 12:10:10.248+0000: 6675: warning : qemuDomainObjBeginJobInternal:4709 : Cannot start job (modify, none) for domain vm_TestCase6052_0614450184; current job is (modify, none) owned by (6674 remoteDispatchDomainBlockCommit, 0 <null>) for (31s, 0s)

[....]

2018-08-06 12:17:18.055+0000: 6675: warning : qemuDomainObjBeginJobInternal:4709 : Cannot start job (query, none) for domain vm_TestCase6052_0614450184; current job is (modify, none) owned by (6674 remoteDispatchDomainBlockCommit, 0 <null>) for (459s, 0s)

So the process was stuck for ~20 minutes before being killed:

2018-08-06 12:32:27.858+0000: 6675: error : virProcessKillPainfully:401 : Failed to terminate process 723 with SIGTERM: Device or resource busy

We then killed the process with SIGKILL which was successful.

The following reply is a result of terminating the qemu process. Closing the monitor finalizes the existing block-commit API call with an error:

11278 2018-08-06 12:32:38.011+0000: 6667: error : qemuMonitorIORead:610 : Unable to read from monitor: Connection reset by peer

VM log file 'vm_TestCase6052_0614450184.log' contains the following entry from libvirtd:

2018-08-06 12:32:38.329+0000: shutting down, reason=destroyed

This means that the process was terminated by the virDomainDestroy API on user's request.

I suspect that the problem why qemu did not respond is in the storage, but with this data I can't provide any more insight. The VM was then terminated on request and the error message which was reported is expected in this scenario since the VM got stuck.

For further debugging it would be beneficial to collect a backtrace of all threads of the qemu process which got stuck during block commit and move this issue to investigate to the qemu team.

The current information doesn't ring any bells. Please clone this BZ or transfer it to the QEMU component so it can be prioritized. Thanks.
