Description Carlos O'Donell 2018-08-13 20:32:04 UTC
The GNU C Library manual has a warning under the abort() API that doesn't immediately serve the needs of glibc users. The warning is a political commentary on the US global gag rule about abortion information.

The warning was temporarily removed upstream, but was put back, and will remain upstream until consensus is reached upstream over the warning's removal. Fedora's position doesn't have to follow upstream and we can remove the warning from the manual.

Given that the warning is confusing international users, and doesn't really make sense in a technical manual for Fedora, the plan is to remove the warning from the manual. The warning is not in an invariant section and so it can be removed.

The plan for Rawhide (F29), F28, and F27 is to remove the warning.

The primary reasons for removal:

* It's confusing.

  - Confused developer 6 months ago with ~900 views.
  https://stackoverflow.com/questions/48445031/why-would-it-be-illegal-to-inform-about-abort

  - Culturally irrelevant and doesn't reach non-US audience.
  https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/d4783/federal_censorship_regulations_may_restrict/

* It's the wrong venue (poor audience reach)

  - Consider what gnome does, and makes public statements:
  https://www.gnome.org/news/2017/06/the-gnome-foundation-statment-on-immigration-ban/

* It offends and is not inclusive.

  - At least two women have posted on the public libc-alpha list that the warning is inappropriate since it makes light of a serious topic.

  - Not all jokes/sattire/puzzles should be removed, but certainly confusing ones with poor audience reach will be removed to improve the manual.

Fixed in Rawhide (F29) for glibc-2.28-5.fc29.

This bug will be reused for the F28 and F27 fixes.
