Hi,

thank you for reporting the issue! Would you mind providing any debug information for me to look into it? cupsd debug2 log will be great to have a general idea, maybe others will be needed https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_printing_problems

Comment 3 Zdenek Dohnal 2018-09-17 13:10:34 UTC
Please attach the file with logs, there is a manual how to do it in the link above. Logs you copied/pasted are cropped. And please use the command for specific job ID.

And a quick check: what is your ghostscript version? Didn't the ghostscript update land in the same time as CUPS? If you can downgrade ghostscript to 9.23-1, does it help?

What does CUPS Web UI say about the job and printer when the job is issued? Are there any messages for the job in Jobs tab. Or about printer in Printers tab? (you need to have cups.service running for CUPS web ui).

Other thing - I see foomatic-rip filter is ending with 1, which indicates error. Are you able to print a text file as raw data? See if you can print f.e. /etc/fstab by:
$ lp -d <your_print_queue> -o raw /etc/fstab

If you can print the file with '-o raw' and you cannot print /etc/fstab without '-o raw', then some of filters can be at fault. Then I will need to look into the file which goes to the printer. You can do it by following:

1) add FileDevice Yes to /etc/cups/cups-files.conf and restart cups
2) create a new print queue by:
$ sudo lpadmin -p test -v file:/tmp/printout -P /etc/cups/ppd/<your_printer>.ppd -E
3) $ lp -d test /etc/fstab

Then go to /tmp and attach file 'printout' here as attachement.

1. Downgrade ghostscript dosn´ t help
2 Cups webui say´s "filter failed". you can see it in the attachment
3 it will print no raw data
4 printout can´ t attached while thos bugzilla gives a http 500 error maybe the file is root user

Comment 6 Matthias Fiedler 2018-09-17 14:44:41 UTC
manualy open the printout by vi gives empty file

Comment 7 Zdenek Dohnal 2018-09-17 15:27:04 UTC
I need to know which filters are run for the job - please attach cupsd log for the job. Logs, which you pasted, are cropped and incomplete.

Comment 9 Matthias Fiedler 2018-09-18 06:33:37 UTC
i hope it´ s the right file, whike i can´ t find cupsd.log by searching

Comment 10 Zdenek Dohnal 2018-09-18 06:47:03 UTC
cupsd log isn't a name of file, but definition what it is - logs from cupsd daemon. You can name this file how you want, but what's important is it is created by redirecting output of journalctl command. See https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_printing_problems#Getting_debug_logging_from_journal

From https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_printing_problems#Getting_debug_logging_from_journal

"To filter out messages relating to a specific job ID, use:

$ journalctl -u cups JID=...

That's what I want. And please do not paste the logs here again, they are cropped and now even irrelevant.
(tab completion will show you which job IDs have log messages)

For getting logs into a file, you just need to add ' > filename' at the end of commands mentioned in 5. Please add a file with CUPS logs from journal to the bug report. "

Follow these steps from command line:
1) $ lp -d <you_printer> /etc/fstab
2) after issuing previous command, you will see a text like '<your_printer>-<somenumbers>', give it 5-10 seconds
3) $ journalctl -u cups JID=<somenumbers> > cupsd.log
4) attach that file as attachment.

Would you mind trying following test builds? I would like to narrow down what can create the issue.

Comment 16 Zdenek Dohnal 2018-09-18 11:40:23 UTC
Which one works for you? Each build has one patch, which came in the newest update, disabled, so if none of them works for you, then the issue is in something under cups.
And still missing the logs...

Please try to write in English as best you can - because I'm not native speaker, so I might not get you correctly (I think I cannot understand what you meant by: "fiters tailed on the printerdialog"). And if you are sharing screens, where can be important info, please set your language defaults to English or describe it properly, because I don't understand German.

Comment 18 Matthias Fiedler 2018-09-18 11:51:30 UTC
nothing works for me, i get "Filter failed" message in the printerdialog

Maybe the reason is the current kernel or one of this existing bugs:

Just in case, here is the build without patches from the last update:

Would you mind telling me which cups version did you have when printer worked?

Comment 20 Matthias Fiedler 2018-09-18 15:46:02 UTC
with this packages are installed the Printer works for me:

And when you update only cups, can you print? You can update only cups by:
$ dnf upgrade cups
And still missing the logs.

Do you have debug2 log level set? It doesn't seems like it from log. You did it before with cupsctl command, so I thought you have it set. Because the log is short.
You can find how to set it in link I shared. Please try to print again with enabled debug2 log level and then re-upload cupsd log for the newest JID.

You wrote you cannot print with newer ghostscript - did you try to stay on old ghostscript and update cups and see if it works?

That's our winner - foo2zjs-wrapper cannot be find. Reassigning to foo2zjs. And did you try cups-2.2.6-15.fc28? It seems like harmless change to logging, so no problem should be there.
But if your problems started with cups-2.2.6-16.fc28, then probably foo2zjs was doing something nasty with environment variables, which is considered dangerous and forbidden since the 16. release.

Comment 29 Matthias Fiedler 2018-09-19 15:19:37 UTC
the Problem starts with 2.2.6-22.fc28

will this mean that my Printer since the new version will never works under fedora or is the any way to sove this problem?

Comment 30 Zdenek Dohnal 2018-09-20 07:33:11 UTC
At comment #20 you said the last working cups was 2.2.6-14, now you are telling me the first not-working is 2.2.6-22... it is difference of 8 releases, please clarify exactly what cups version was working for you and which isn't.
And that't doesn't mean your printer will stop working - just foo2zjs maintainer should look into this issue and see where is the problem - because foo2zjs-wrapper isn't in CUPS.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 28 is nearing its end of life.
On 2019-May-28 Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for
Fedora 28. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases
that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as
EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '28'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 28 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 32 Ben Cotton 2019-05-28 22:30:58 UTC
Fedora 28 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2019-05-28. Fedora 28 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
