Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
Red Hat Satellite engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on Satellite to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs will be migrated starting at the end of May. If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/SAT-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

bootstrap script attached

1. Proposed title of this feature request

[RFE] Activation key should be defined in the Host Group to override the parameter “-a” defined in the bootstrap script.

2. In non-public update...

3. What is the nature and description of the request?

The bootstrap script handles content registration, product certificates, and Puppet configuration. The bootstrap script has the advantage of taking a Red Hat Enterprise Linux system, regardless of where it is registered (RHN, Satellite 5, SAM, RHSM), or if it is registered at all, and subscribing it to Satellite 6.

When we run the bootstrap script it is mandartory to pass the below 5 parameters when running the script :

1. Activation key
2. Host Group
3. Location
4. Organization
5. Server

Now the requirement is there should an ability to define Activation key in the Host group so that when we run the script and pass “-a” parameter for the activation key it provides a mechanism to *override* the Activation key(s) defined in the host group.

4. Why does the customer need this? (List the business requirements here)

By using the above feature in the bootstrap.py script to use the Activation key(s) defined in the Host Group it would:-

a) Greatly reduce the complexity of our post install provisioning script called by our Orchestration process.

b) Reduce the possibility of code errors

c) Prevent duplication of effort

d) Retaining the '-a' option provides a mechanism to *override* the Activation key(s) defined in the host group.

e) Provide a much better end-user experience.

5. How would the customer like to achieve this? (List the functional requirements here)

Add a functionality by which Activation Key can be defined in Host Group

6. Is there already an existing RFE upstream or in Red Hat Bugzilla?

No

7. Does the customer have any specific timeline dependencies and which release At At the earliest

8. Is the sales team involved in this request and do they have any additional input?

No

9. List any affected packages or components.

N/A

10. Would the customer be able to assist in testing this functionality if implemented?

Yes

Thank you for your interest in Satellite 6. We have evaluated this request, and while we recognize that it is a valid request, we do not expect this to be implemented in the product in the foreseeable future. This is due to other priorities for the product, and not a reflection on the request itself. We are therefore closing this out as WONTFIX. If you have any concerns about this, please do not reopen. Instead, feel free to contact Red Hat Technical Support. Thank you.

The Satellite Team is attempting to provide an accurate backlog of bugzilla requests which we feel will be resolved in the next few releases. We do not believe this bugzilla will meet that criteria, and have plans to close it out in 1 month. This is not a reflection on the validity of the request, but a reflection of the many priorities for the product. If you have any concerns about this, feel free to contact Red Hat Technical Support or your account team. If we do not hear from you, we will close this bug out. Thank you.

Dear Satellite Team,
I still do believe this one should be raised in priority and included in the next release (I myself have at least two customers that are seeing this feature as a big improvement to their IT operations) and I see others.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you to re-evaluate or re-prioritize this: do you need more context or better enlightenment from my side?

Kind Regards,
 Cisco.

I think this is valid request done by two different customers, so request you not to close this bugzilla unless we will have a plan for a future release implementing it, this can be even in 6.8 or later but still should not be dropped. Thank you.

Comment 13 Mike McCune 2020-12-09 22:17:40 UTC
Upon review of our valid but aging backlog the Satellite Team has concluded that this Bugzilla does not meet the criteria for a resolution in the near term, and are planning to close in approximately a month. If you have any concerns about this, please contact your Red Hat Account team. Thank you.
