Description of problem: Firefox as packaged in Fedora isn't respecting the user preferences for Home page. In the Firefox preferences, I have configured the setting "Home page and new windows" to "Firefox Home (default)", but new windows are showing the page start.fedoraproject.org, and the location bar isn't focused for typing. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): 64.0 (fedora - 1.0) Steps to Reproduce: 1. In Firefox Preferences, Home tab, configure "Home page and new windows" to "Firefox Home (default)" 2. Open a new Firefox window (e.g. Ctrl-N) Actual results: The page https://start.fedoraproject.org/ opens instead of Firefox Home, and the location entry is not focused. Expected results: The "Firefox Home" UI (showing Web Search, Top Sites, etc. as configured in the preferences) should appear, and the location entry should be focused. I have confirmed this issue happens in a new (clean) Firefox profile.
As a workaround, using about:config and manually setting: browser.startup.homepage = about:newtab restores the expected behaviour.
So the browser.startup.homepage was not set to about:newtab I believe. Are you able to set to different homepage in preferences now? Please also retest with safe mode: firefox -safe-mode I can't reproduce it ATM.
I think my issue is related: I keep setting my Preferences/Home/"Homepage and new windows" to the custom URL about:home, leaving the Preferences/Home/"New tabs" as is - Firefox Home (Default). As expected, new windows and tabs dislpay about:home. However, after package upgrades by dnf, the settings are reset and I get the fedora package default for new windows and tabs: https://start.fedoraproject.org. While I think that it is okay to "brand" the official package by setting a fedora homepage, subsequent updates should not touch custom preferences. https://start.fedoraproject.org is in my top-sites section of about:home anyway... I read the news...
This message is a reminder that Fedora 29 is nearing its end of life. Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 29 on 2019-11-26. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '29'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not able to fix it before Fedora 29 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete.
Fedora 29 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2019-11-26. Fedora 29 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates.
