Description of problem:

Fedora 30 guest on Fedora 29 host, using virt-manager

Actual results:

Long delay with black screen. With default GRUB 5 second timeout, the GRUB menu never appears. If I change the GRUB timeout to 7s, it will appear for a fraction of a second, and in that fraction I can see its timer is 1s. So it's been displaying the whole time, it's just that qxl is somehow not intializing.

However if I do a reboot of the VM rather than a cold boot, the GRUB menu is visible without delay and with the expected timeout.

And if I change the video driver from qxl to virtio, the problem also doesn't happen.


Expected results:

Same as virtio. I should see the GRUB menu with a 5s timeout, if it has a 5 second timeout set. And right now I have to set it to about 10s if I'm using qxl video, in order to have enough time to see and interact with the GRUB menu.

Originally filed as bug 1672850, because I thought it was a GRUB problem just not recognizing boot failure and needing to unhide the GRUB menu; but subsequent testing shows that this is related to qxl as the video driver.
