New patch to solve problem

The original patch caused compiler warnings on build.  The attached patch
compiles cleanly.  Can the reporter please test this patch to verify that the
problem is solved with it.

A fix for this problem has just been committed to the RHEL3 U7
patch pool this evening (in kernel version 2.4.21-37.12.EL).
