RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Jakub Jelen 2019-04-09 14:21:44 UTC
According to the PELC review [1], pki-core implements crypto. But for RHEL8.1 can not ship non-certified crypto in arbitrary packages.

Can you check, whether the crypto referenced in the PELC review is mandatory for the application to function or it can be removed or replaced by native Java implementation?

Comment 1 Jakub Jelen 2019-04-12 14:24:18 UTC
Simo,
this issue was identified by Nikos earlier this week as it was overlooked during the initial review of the packages in PELC. The ideal solution should be removal of the crypto implementation in this package.

Jack, can you check where is this crypto implementation used and whether the system one can be used instead?

Comment 2 Jack Magne 2019-04-12 16:46:34 UTC
Hello:

On sick leave today but wanted to take a first pass at this.

I'm going by the 3 things left in the review as I recall:

1. CMAC and HMAC : These are authentication code implementations that satisfy the secure channel protocols for the token management system.

These routines simply create thee required string by going through an algorithm that consists of using a bunch of low level crypto steps such
as encryption. The thing is ,all the actual cyrpto operations are done with jss thus nss. The code in question then merely orchestrates
the process of doing cyrpto operations and arranging the results in the final string. Here is where I ask if this actuall qualifies as an
undesired implementation or not? If it is undesired we can probably move that level of code down into jss.

3. The DSA stuff looks, upon further review to mostly use either jss or the sun stuff to perform actual crypto operations and such. The grey
area is there seems to be some low level code that constructs things such as algorithm ids, which could be problematic.

I'm going to need to take another pass at this again next week. Also, I can find out if we even still have anyone that uses DSA at this point.

Comment 3 Simo Sorce 2019-04-15 13:54:50 UTC
Jack,
about 1, yes please move all of it in JSS, and the same for 3 (unless you plan to remove it entirely.

Both HMAC and DSA are algorithms constructed on lower level cryptographic primitives indeed, but they are considered algorithms in their own by FIPS and require to be implemented within the certified libraries.

This is tested partially with :

1. CRMFPopClient -Worked as expected
2. PKCS10Client -Worked as expected
3. SharedToken CMC -Worked as expected
4. Agent CMC - -Worked as expected
5. CMC Encrypted/Decreypted POP - HAve some issues because of bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1744095
