synaptics touchpad detected but nonfunctional on acer laptop

Description of problem:
On a fresh RHEL4U2 install on an Acer Aspire 3000, the Synaptics touchpad is
detected but nonfunctional.

Please attach the output of cat /proc/bus/input/devices

Here's the contents of /proc/bus/input/devices
That seems to be in order - please attach /etc/X11/xorg.conf and look in dmesg
for any obvious input/serio related messages.

grepping dmesg for serio and synaptics
Please can you back up the xorg.conf and run system-config-display --reconfig
and attach the generated configuration.
