Description Lumír Balhar 2019-08-09 13:41:56 UTC
Python 2.7 will reach end-of-life in January 2020, over 9 years after it was released. This falls within the Fedora 31 lifetime.
Packages that depend on Python 2 are being switched to Python 3 or removed from Fedora: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/F31_Mass_Python_2_Package_Removal#Information_on_Remaining_Packages
Python 2 will be retired in Fedora 32: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/RetirePython2

To help planning, we'd like to know the plans for python-pydns's future. Specifically:

- What is the reason for the Python2 dependency? (Is it software written in Python, or does it just provide Python bindings, or use Python in the build system or test runner?)

- What are the upstream/community plans/timelines regarding Python 3?

- What is the guidance for porting to Python 3? (Assuming that there is someone who generally knows how to port to Python 3, but doesn't know anything about the particular package, what are the next steps to take?)

This bug is filed semi-automatically, and might not have all the context specific to python-pydns.
If you need anything from us, or something is unclear, please mention it here.

Thank you.

Please answer the above questions. If you don't, the package can be orphaned: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/F31_Mass_Python_2_Package_Removal#Information_on_Remaining_Packages

If you need any information or help, or if you need some more time, please let us know.

Package has been retired:

python 3.3+ has a native implementation of this library

Comment 6 Paul Wouters 2019-08-29 19:02:36 UTC
apologies - I confused two bugzilla tabs and closed the wrong bug :(

It seems the sub pacakge was removed and then re-instated by Miro Hrončok <miro>

Comment 7 Lumír Balhar 2019-08-30 04:19:42 UTC
We cannot remove python2-pydns now because it's not a leaf package (see: https://fedora.portingdb.xyz/pkg/python-pydns/)

What you can do, if you want, is to orphan this package if you don't want to take care of it anymore.

FTR the chain is: python2-pydns (python-2-only) ← python-pymilter (dual support) ← macromilter (python-2-only, leaf, bz#1738083)

Comment 8 Paul Wouters 2019-08-30 16:42:50 UTC
I'll fix python-pymilter

Comment 9 Lumír Balhar 2019-09-09 07:29:29 UTC
python2-pydns and python2-pymilter have to stay with us until macromilter will be ported to Python 3. If the maintainers of macromilter won't do it till the deadline, they will have to request a fesco exception also for its dependencies (even transitive).

Comment 10 Petr Viktorin (pviktori) 2020-10-02 20:13:34 UTC
Package was retired.
