Description Jan Pazdziora 2019-09-12 15:25:09 UTC
Description of problem:

Starting ovs-vswitchd.service produces AVC denial about modules.dep.bin.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

openvswitch-2.10.1-2.fc30.x86_64
selinux-policy-3.14.3-45.fc30.noarch

How reproducible:

Deterministic.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. dnf install -y /usr/lib/systemd/system/ovs-vswitchd.service
2. systemctl start ovs-vswitchd.service
3. Check /var/log/audit/audit.log

Actual results:

type=AVC msg=audit(1568301000.181:120): avc:  denied  { map } for  pid=9160 comm="modprobe" path="/usr/lib/modules/5.2.13-200.fc30.x86_64/modules.dep.bin" dev="dm-0" ino=8648001 scontext=system_u:system_r:openvswitch_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:modules_dep_t:s0 tclass=file permissive=0

type=AVC msg=audit(1568301000.464:122): avc:  denied  { net_broadcast } for  pid=9167 comm="ovs-vswitchd" capability=11  scontext=system_u:system_r:openvswitch_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:system_r:openvswitch_t:s0 tclass=capability permissive=0

Expected results:

No AVC denial.

Additional info:

The net_broadcast was filed separately as bug 1751791 against Fedora 29, the modules.dep.bin seems new in Fedora 30.

Note that we used to have very similar bug 1508336 but back then the modules.dep.bin label was modules_object_t, now it's modules_dep_t.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 30 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 30 on 2020-05-26.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '30'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 30 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 4 Jan Pazdziora 2020-05-13 09:10:29 UTC
In Fedora 31 with

openvswitch-2.12.0-1.fc31.x86_64
selinux-policy-3.14.4-50.fc31.noarch

the modprobe AVC denial is no longer present but there is a new one:

type=AVC msg=audit(1589360800.320:617): avc:  denied  { fowner } for  pid=13813 comm="install" capability=3  scontext=system_u:system_r:openvswitch_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:system_r:openvswitch_t:s0 tclass=capability permissive=0

Would you like a separate bugzilla for that or can we turn this one (or bug 1751791) to generic "no SELinux denials desired for default openvswitch setup"?

Comment 6 Ben Cotton 2020-11-24 16:06:52 UTC
Fedora 31 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2020-11-24. Fedora 31 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
