When using platex without installing texlive-platex first I got the error: This is e-pTeX, Version 3.14159265-p3.8.2-190131-2.6 (utf8.euc) (TeX Live 2019) >(preloaded format=platex) restricted \write18 enabled. kpathsea: Running mktexfmt platex.fmt mktexfmt: mktexfmt is using the following fmtutil.cnf files (in precedence order): mktexfmt: /usr/share/texlive/texmf-dist/web2c/fmtutil.cnf mktexfmt: mktexfmt is using the following fmtutil.cnf file for writing changes: mktexfmt: /home/stefan/.texlive2019/texmf-config/web2c/fmtutil.cnf mktexfmt [INFO]: writing formats under /home/stefan/.texlive2019/texmf-var/web2c mktexfmt [INFO]: --- remaking platex with eptex mktexfmt [WARNING]: inifile platex.ini for platex/eptex not found. mktexfmt [INFO]: Not selected formats: 18 mktexfmt [INFO]: Failed to build: 1 (eptex/platex) mktexfmt [INFO]: Total formats: 19 mktexfmt [INFO]: exiting with status 1 I can't find the format file `platex.fmt'! After installing the package texlive-platex it worked. Used documentclass was jsarticle.
