Description Răzvan Sandu 2020-02-08 11:11:07 UTC
Description of problem:

After upgrading from Fedora 30 to Fedora 31 (Workstation), some keys on the laptop's keyboard (especially "s", "o" and "Delete") does not work continuously, making typing very difficult.

More precise, when one of these keys is pressed, nothing happens for some time (some minutes), then it reverts back to normal by itself, with no intervention (leaving the impression that the keyboard was "busy" for some time).

This happens intermittently, randomly (a couple of times during a 4-5 h working session).

The laptop is a high-end gaming Acer Nitro 5 with illuminated keyboard (https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/series/nitro5), fairly recent (less than one year old) and in a very good shape (no unauthorised interventions, brute force, dirt or liquids on the keyboard), leaving a very low probability for a hardware issue.

Seeking to solve this annoying problem, the last official (UEFI) BIOS update from the manufacturer was succesfully applied.

When tested, the keyboard works normally in Microsoft Windows. It also used to work normally in Fedora 30, until I performed the upgrade via dnf (it reported no error during the process).

The laptop's physical keyboard has US layout; the system uses Romanian as software keyboard layout, as provided by the distro (with no custom modifications).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 31 Workstation, default configuration

Actual results:
Randomly, some non-grouped keys cease to work for some time, then revert to normal operation with no intervention.

Expected results:
The keyboard should work normally.

Additional info:
I am able to submit detailed hardware information via h-node.org (USB controllers?) or information about software packages and/or command output if further specific instructions are given.

Some other reports about peculiarities regarding the Acer Nitro's keyboard exist on the web (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=acer+nitro+keyboard+not+working&t=ffab&atb=v172-1&ia=web)

Moving to gnome-settings-daemon for further triage...

Comment 2 Ben Cotton 2020-02-11 16:36:12 UTC
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 32 development cycle.
Changing version to 32.

Comment 3 Răzvan Sandu 2020-04-13 12:24:45 UTC
Full hardware details about this Acer Nitro 5 laptop are given here: https://h-node.org/notebooks/view/en/2152/AN515-52-70PL--Nitro-5-
A ticket was opened to Acer, in order to verify hardware aspects: https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/825502

Comment 4 Fedora Program Management 2021-04-29 17:00:35 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 32 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 32 on 2021-05-25.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '32'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 32 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Comment 5 Ben Cotton 2021-05-25 17:35:23 UTC
Fedora 32 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-05-25. Fedora 32 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
