Description khartsoe@redhat.com 2020-02-10 20:52:58 UTC
Description of problem:

Colocation content requires clarity around the following requirements/support:

(1) RHCS 4 Installation Guide still presents +1 service per OSD node limit
RHCS 4 supports more than +1 other service on an OSD node for containerized installs leading to smaller clusters, i.e., you can have OSD +1 with any daemon. The +2 option is for RGW only, so you can have n OSD + 1 MON + 1 RGW, for example. The second co-located daemon can only be RGW.

See also "Supported Deployment Topologies" in https://access.redhat.com/articles/1548993

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_ceph_storage/4/html-single/installation_guide/index#colocation-of-containerized-ceph-daemons

(2) RHCS 4 Installation Guide states that containerized installs are only supported on RHEL 8, then the docs go on to show how to install containerized on RHEL 7, then it warns that containers on RHEL 7 will be RHEL 8 containers (see "4.2. Installing a Red Hat Ceph Storage cluster"...."Important"). Reality is the container only exists for RHEL 8, and that you can deploy it on RHEL 7 and 8 hosts. But the container's insides are only RHEL 8.

Clarity to be added that conveys the following:

Both containerized and RPM based installs are supported on RHEL 7, but note that the containers installed on RHEL 7 will be RHEL 8 containers. RHEL 8 containers on RHEL 7 are fully supported for RHCS 4.
