Description skierpage 2020-03-15 00:55:01 UTC
Description of problem:
Today's `flatpak update` printed
Info: org.gnome.Platform is end-of-life, with reason: The GNOME 3.32 runtime has reached end of life. Please upgrade to a newer version.

The first phrase is misleading, org.gnome.Platform isn't going anywhere. And it doesn't help me
* discover if anything is still using this version of the platform
* remove that version of the platform

I'm not sure "Please upgrade to a newer version" for a runtime is useful. Very few end users will pin flatpak applications to a particular runtime, if it's even possible. Presumably like me they'll already have newer runtimes installed, and if any app still requires the end-of-life version of the platform they can't do much about it beyond contacting the developers or switching to a different app.

Version-Release number of selected component : 1.4.4

How reproducible: not sure

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Run `flatpak update` when a particular platform version has reached end-of-life

Actual results:
Misleading message

Expected results:

I think the fix for first few problems I mentioned in the bug description is to change the beginning of the message to include the architecture and version, i.e.
  Info: org.gnome.Platform/x86_64/3.32 is end-of-life, ...

and maybe a more useful closing sentence is
`flatpak uninstall --unused` will remove it if no installed Flatpak app depends on it.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 31 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 31 on 2020-11-24.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '31'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 31 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

I ran
  % flatpak install org.gnome.Platform/x86_64/3.32

on Fedora 33 and it displayed:
Info: org.gnome.Platform is end-of-life, with reason: The GNOME 3.32 runtime is no longer supported as of 11th March 2020. Please ask your application developer to migrate to a supported platform.

It still isn't giving the version as I suggested:

  Info: org.gnome.Platform/x86_64/3.32 is end-of-life, ...

and it isn't suggesting to run `flatpak uninstall --unused`.

Confusing message.

I was confused by the flatpak messages when doing a flatpak update. See the screenshot.

Comment 6 Ben Cotton 2021-11-30 18:20:24 UTC
Fedora 33 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-11-30. Fedora 33 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
