Note: This bug is displayed in read-only format because
the product is no longer active in Red Hat Bugzilla.
RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.
Description of problem:
I'm not sure how else to summarize this but I reimage baremetal in my test lab thousands of times a day. I'm seeing this on CentOS and EPEL repos. Initially, I thought I was running into issues with obtaining mirrorlists from CentOS or FedoraProject infra so I started using a local mirrorlist. Maybe once or twice a day (out of thousands of yum transactions), I get Error: Failed to download metadata for repo XXX.
Even after switching to a local mirrorlist (https://github.com/ceph/ceph-cm-ansible/blob/master/roles/testnode/templates/mirrorlists/8/CentOS-AppStream-mirrorlist).

How reproducible:
Not very. I ran `sudo yum clean all; sudo rm -rf /var/cache/dnf/*; sudo yum -v install -y kernel` in a loop for hours and only got one error.
Actual results:

I think I know whats happening here, I even managed to exactly reproduce it.
You probably have systemd dnf-makecache.timer running (I think its set up by default) which periodically runs `dnf makecache --timer`, and if you do your command `sudo yum clean all; sudo rm -rf /var/cache/dnf/*; sudo yum -v install -y kernel` at the same time while the makecache is running you delete the lock file in /var/cache/dnf/, both transactions run at the same time and everything breaks.
This would explain the very irregular occurrence since you have to hit the exact time the timer starts makecache.
Can you check if you have such a timer? If you do I would suggest disabling it in order to fix this, you clean the cache anyway in your command manually.
Indeed I do!
[root@smithi094 ~]# systemctl status dnf-makecache.timer
● dnf-makecache.timer - dnf makecache --timer
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/dnf-makecache.timer; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)

Trigger: Mon 2020-03-30 19:08:28 UTC; 2min 6s left
Mar 30 13:55:33 smithi094 systemd[1]: Started dnf makecache --timer.
I'll disable this service in our CI. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help.
I am going to close this as NOTABUG since it technically isn't a problem in dnf, but in case it turns out this wasn't the issue or it didn't help please reopen it.
