Would it be possible to update to 3.18.1 in Rawhide? I was looking at enabling PHP support in the grpc package, which would require enabling it in protobuf first. I tried backporting https://github.com/protocolbuffers/protobuf/pull/8105 to fix PHP8 compatibility, but still couldn’t get all of the PHP tests to pass without additional fixes, so I gave up on making a PR for now. I suspect this would work just fine in a newer protobuf version.
Possibly, but I think we're going to have to finally drop the java sub-package due to missing dependencies. It also would be good to do a test build of deps in a copr to see if anything breaks.

3.19 would be really helpful for me as I try to update python-proto-plus in BZ 2017907.
PR made[0] for 3.19.0. It would require another soname bump, unfortunately. 😭 [0] https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/protobuf/pull-request/7

Created attachment 1912018 [details] Update to 21.6 (#1831350)
the-new-hotness/release-monitoring.org's scratch build of protobuf-21.6-1.fc36.src.rpm for rawhide failed http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=92035132
GRPC 1.49.0 is released. It is the first version that supports this update, and it also *requires* it. I’ll get a PR ready for grpc as soon as I can, and we can handle both updates in a side tag.
Thank you, Ben! 👏🏻
So, who will do the rebuild of protobuf and all dependencies? Is already somebody actively working on it? I can do it, but I wanted to make sure nobody else started it. Not sure about it with the messages here and it in the pull request.
First somebody needs to get https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/protobuf/pull-requests/13 updated to 21.6 and building on i686. Then I can finish https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/grpc/pull-request/17 and validate it in COPR, and meanwhile someone should test-rebuild all the protobuf dependent packages in another COPR. Then both incompatible updates should be announced to the devel mailing list and to dependent package maintainers with one week’s notice. Finally, protobuf can be built in a side tag, then I can bootstrap grpc in the side tag, then we can start on dependent package rebuilds. Because of the number of packages that depend on protobuf, this will require a provenpackager (which I am not).
I've filed https://github.com/protobuf-c/protobuf-c/issues/524
Thanks, Orion!
(In reply to Orion Poplawski from comment #27) > I've filed https://github.com/protobuf-c/protobuf-c/issues/524 Looks like you submitted the bug against protobuf-c (the C bindings) and not protobuf itself.

I've updated https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/protobuf/pull-requests/13 to 21.7 and it builds fine. Dependencies being test rebuilt here: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/orion/protobuf21/builds/. But this ends what I can do to drive this forward.
From my reading of the build failures, other than grpc (which seems to be ready with an update), ignition-msgs seems to be the only other build failure that probably should get looked into before proceeding with the update.
The grpc update is not quite ready. I’m digging through a few new test failures and such, and I have to validate its own dependent packages. I’ve been away from a computer for a few days; hopefully it will not take too long to finish working through it.

More of the Google packages need a newer version of protobuf, so I've been looking at possibly updating to the latest in the 3.x tree (3.21.9 as of right now). Would that be an easier lift than going all the way to 21.x? It looks like 3.21.9 compiles okay but there's a maven plugin missing: [ERROR] UndeclaredThrowableException: InvocationTargetException: Plugin org.codehaus.mojo:animal-sniffer-maven-plugin:1.20 or one of its dependencies could not be resolved: Cannot access central (https://repo.maven.apache.org/maven2) in offline mode and the artifact org.codehaus.mojo:animal-sniffer-maven-plugin:jar:1.20 has not been downloaded from it before.

I managed to get 21.10 into COPR but the builds keep failing: https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/mhayden/protobuf/ I had to package the animal-sniffer maven plugin, but now that's taking me down a weird path into android dependencies. Does anyone with more Java knowledge have an idea of how to proceed?

Does anyone with more Java > knowledge have an idea of how to proceed? I wish we could just drop the Java bindings. Unfortunately, it looks like mysql-connector-java still uses them. Maybe we could email the mysql-connector-java-maintainers alias and ask for help?

Maybe we could email the > mysql-connector-java-maintainers alias and ask for help? Hi, I currently maintain mysql-connector-java in Fedora. I bumped into this issue because I am unable to build the newest version of mysql-connector-j(8.0.33) as it seem to need protobuf of version at least 3.21.9. The protobuf-java could maybe be excluded for runtime of mysql-connector-java[1] as it is not needed when not using the X DevAPI features. However, at this point I can not see clear solution how to remove protobuf from BR of mysql-connector-java. Major, I see you ran some copr builds of newer protobuf. Could you please rerun the builds? The logs are no longer available in copr. [1] https://dev.mysql.com/doc/connector-j/8.0/en/connector-j-installing-maven.html

Hey Zuzana, I'd be more than happy to have more help on this package. It's an extremely tricky one and I picked it up when the previous maintainer ran out of time for it. However, I don't know enough about the software itself to tackle some of these tricky problems (and the long train of dependencies). Would you like to co-maintain it with us?
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/protobuf/pull-request/25 LGTM , can we use PP power ?
(In reply to Sergio Basto from comment #87) > https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/protobuf/pull-request/25 LGTM , can we > use PP power ? There are approximately a zillion dependent packages, and I doubt anywhere near all of them are ready for the breaking changes in protobuf v4. I know grpc will need a simultaneous update, which is on my list to work on now that there is a buildable protobuf spec file to test against. However, I don’t think anyone has even begun the rest of the necessary impact check.
(In an imaginary world where everything else were ready and tested, it would still make sense to wait until the side tag for the Python 3.12 mass rebuild is merged.)
(In reply to Sergio Basto from comment #87) > https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/protobuf/pull-request/25 LGTM , can we > use PP power ? Your PR looks reasonable, but as Ben stated, we have two main issues at play here: 1. Tons of dependencies that need to be built with this update to see if those dependencies still work 2. Pending Python 3.12 update
