Description Todd Warner 2020-07-23 18:22:13 UTC
gnome-software-3.36.1-1.fc32.x86_64

Description of problem:
I was having issues with gnome-software picking up the icon images for some of my packaged desktop applications. This is because gnome-software diverges from the appstream spec a bit (I think).

Turns out there were two issues.
1. I didn't include all the PNG icon images with one version of my releases because I thought SVGs were sufficient. They are not. I fixed that. This is not a bug, but maybe the documentation needs to improve somewhere (gnome-software has no documentation as far as I can tell)
2. I had the .metainfo.xml file better meet the spec. That included changing the ID tag value from [productname].desktop to [appid] ... and not [appid].desktop.

According to <https://www.freedesktop.org/software/appstream/docs/chap-Metadata.html> it should be the appid and the launchable tag will have the "desktop-id" and the full [appid].desktop as the value. (And yes, I changed the actual filename to match.)

The result was an icon on the desktop, but the icon was missing for the listing in gnome-software.

Expected results:
1. a desktop file called [appid].desktop
2. a metainfo file called [appid].metainfo.xml
3. In that metainfo file, <id>[appid]</id> and <launchable type="desktop-id">[appid].desktop</launchable>
4. Icon on the desktop and icon in the gnome-software listing for the application.

Additional info:

I spoke to Richard Hughes on IRC and he pointed out the need to ensure the PNG icons are included because gnome-software requires this. I figured out the .desktop thing on my own.

This package has changed maintainer in Fedora. Reassigning to the new maintainer of this component.

Comment 2 Fedora Program Management 2021-04-29 16:34:18 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 32 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 32 on 2021-05-25.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '32'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 32 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Can you provide more information (possibly a link to the example application that is having problems)? I tried an application I work with that has the rdns naming scheme and the launcher-id tag and it seems to be working as expected in F34.

Comment 4 Ben Cotton 2021-05-25 16:35:17 UTC
Fedora 32 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-05-25. Fedora 32 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
