ABRT log sent via email

Description of problem:

I was trying to import the Home Assistant virtual appliance (OVA) from https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/releases/download/4.11/hassos_ova-4.11.ova into my Ovirt 4.3.10.4 infrastructure. First, it failed with a name error (because the VM is named "Home Assistant" and apparently a space isn't allowed. Once I fix that and rename it to hassio, the import goes through but then it fails at the end with a SIGABRT to qemu-kvm and sends me an email with the Subject: [abrt] qemu-kvm-ev: qemu-kvm killed by SIGABRT

The contents of that email start:
reason: qemu-kvm killed by SIGABRT
cmdline: /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -global virtio-blk-pci.scsi=off -no-user-config -enable-fips -nodefaults -display none -machine accel=kvm:tcg -cpu host -m 2150 -no-reboot -rtc driftfix=slew -no-hpet -global kvm-pit.lost_tick_policy=discard -kernel /var/tmp/.guestfs-36/appliance.d/kernel -initrd /var/tmp/.guestfs-36/appliance.d/initrd -object rng-random,filename=/dev/urandom,id=rng0 -device virtio-rng-pci,rng=rng0 -device virtio-scsi-pci,id=scsi -drive file=/var/tmp/v2vovl459c06.qcow2,cache=unsafe,format=qcow2,copy-on-read=on,discard=unmap,id=hd0,if=none -device scsi-hd,drive=hd0 -drive file=/var/tmp/.guestfs-36/appliance.d/root,snapshot=on,id=appliance,cache=unsafe,if=none,format=raw -device scsi-hd,drive=appliance -device virtio-serial-pci -serial stdio -device sga -chardev socket,path=/tmp/libguestfshT0smr/guestfsd.sock,id=channel0 -device virtserialport,chardev=channel0,name=org.libguestfs.channel.0 -netdev user,id=usernet,net=169.254.0.0/16 -device virtio-net-pci,netdev=usernet -append 'panic=1 console=ttyS0 edd=off udevtimeout=6000 udev.event-timeout=6000 no_timer_check printk.time=1 cgroup_disable=memory usbcore.nousb cryptomgr.notests tsc=reliable 8250.nr_uarts=1 root=/dev/sdb selinux=0 guestfs_verbose=1 guestfs_network=1 TERM=linux guestfs_identifier=v2v'

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download Home Assistant Virtual Appliance from URL above and place it into the host's /tmp
2. From Admin Console: Compute -> Virtual Machines -> Import
3. Source: Virtual Appliance (OVA)
4. Select the host and the OVA file location and click Load
5. Select the Home Assistant VM and move it into the Virtual Machines to Import column, then click Next
6. Open the Advanced options and change the VM name from "Home Assistant" to something else like "hassio" in order to get past the invalid space.
7. Click "OK".
8. Wait. feel free to watch the Event Log as it appears to process but then fails at the very end and sends the ABRT email.

Actual results:

I get a failure of the import and an [abrt] message in email.

Expected results:

The OVA should import.

Comment 1 Arik 2020-07-27 10:47:53 UTC
Can you please provide the import log?
VDSM is supposed to point to it in vdsm.log (search for something like "Storing import log at: '/var/log/vdsm/import/import....')

Comment 2 RHEL Program Management 2020-07-27 10:48:02 UTC
The documentation text flag should only be set after 'doc text' field is provided. Please provide the documentation text and set the flag to '?' again.

Import log of failed import

Hi Arik,
Here is the import log you requested.
A quick read-through and it *looks* to me like it's failing to find the root file system, but there obviously is one otherwise the appliance wouldn't work on VMware.

Comment 4 Arik 2020-07-27 13:14:43 UTC
Thanks Derek.
You're right but this operating system is unlikely to be supported by virt-v2v (that oVirt uses behind the scenes to convert non-KVM guests to KVM).
Why don't you use a qcow2 image (https://github.com/home-assistant/operating-system/releases/download/4.11/hassos_ova-4.11.qcow2.gz) instead?

Comment 5 Derek Atkins 2020-07-27 13:35:16 UTC
It's Linux, so I don't see why it wouldn't be supported?

As for the QCOW2 image, it looks like the only way to import that would be to load it into virt-manager and then import it from there. Unless there is an easier way to import a QCOW2 image into ovirt that I didn't see in the ovirt docs?

Comment 6 Richard W.M. Jones 2020-07-27 13:43:26 UTC
Note that qcow2 is not a replacement for OVA since OVA contains metadata.
The closest might be qcow2 + a libvirt XML file, but generally virt-v2v
likes to talk to the source hypervisor and get the full metadata that way.

Virt-v2v only supports a limited set of guests and source hypervisors:

  https://access.redhat.com/articles/1351473

Having said all that, qemu should never crash, so I'll see if I can reproduce
that because it might indicate a bug or security issue.

Comment 7 Richard W.M. Jones 2020-07-27 13:54:37 UTC
I couldn't get a crash here on RHEL 7. It'd be interesting to see
the full stack trace however. Could you install the corresponding
debuginfo and use something like "coredumpctl gdb" + "t a a bt"?

Comment 8 Derek Atkins 2020-07-27 14:10:34 UTC
Of course it doesn't crash for you.... :(
Did the OVA install for you?

It looks like my host is not 100% up to date. Running yum check-update gives me a (small) laundry list of updates, including a kernel update to 3.10.0-1127.13.1.el7 (it is currently running 3.10.0-1127.10.1.el7.x86_64).

Right now it's downloading 459MB of debuginfo data. I'll get back to you once it completes and I get a chance to run it.

Comment 9 Derek Atkins 2020-07-27 14:21:18 UTC
Well, this might be a problem:

# coredumpctl
No coredumps found.

Comment 10 Derek Atkins 2020-07-27 14:30:38 UTC
I just re-ran the import and coredumpctl still reports no coredumps found.

Comment 11 Richard W.M. Jones 2020-07-27 14:47:31 UTC
The ABRT report says that a core dump was collected. Of course we have
several (3?) systems for collecting core dumps, so maybe it was the other
one ... I've no idea where ABRT stores core dumps or how to fetch them,
but I'd start by looking under /var.

Comment 12 Derek Atkins 2020-07-27 15:01:54 UTC
Found it. Note that it is complaining about not having one debuginfo, but debuginfo-install reports:

Could not find debuginfo for main pkg: 10:qemu-kvm-ev-2.12.0-44.1.el7_8.1.x86_64

You can upload the downloaded image (after it's extracted from the archive file) using the webadmin to a storage domain, create a VM (as Richard mentioned, you'll be missing "metadata" so you'll need to decide on things like the memory and other devices the VM should be assigned with) and attach the uploaded disk to that VM.

Comment 16 Richard W.M. Jones 2020-07-27 16:23:27 UTC
The stack trace matches this one:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1709791

Note this is happening on the qemu shut down path, ie. the conversion
has failed (because virt-v2v doesn't support importing this type of
guest) and we've asked qemu to shut down, and during the shut down
it hit this error.

So thanks for investigating this: it's NOT as far as I can tell a
security problem in qemu. The qemu crash is a duplicate of bug 1709791.
And virt-v2v doesn't support this type of guest and we have no plans
for it.

As the guest is Linux I suggest trying the following approach instead:

(1) Unpack the OVA:

tar xvf hassos_ova-4.11.ova

(2) Convert the VMDK file to qcow2:

qemu-img convert home-assistant.vmdk -O qcow2 home-assistant.qcow2

(3) Import the qcow2 to oVirt as a plain disk image (not using the
virt-v2v import path).

(4) Try to boot it. You may need to set the disk type as SATA,
which will be slow, but it may also be possible to use virtio if
the guest initramfs was built with virtio.

I'd like to mark this as a duplicate of bug 1709791 but BZ is broken ...

Thanks. I've got the metadata from the OVA so I know what it wants to provide.
I downloaded the QCOW2 directly from them instead of converting the VMDK. I presume this should still work as Richard suggested in "step 2"?

I found the upload page and did so, but right now it's saying Status: Paused by System and I cannot attach it to my VM?

Just a quick update on my last message -- the issue was apparently a CA certificate in the browser (shown by actually Testing the Connection!) Duh. The Upload is working now.

I'll ask for help on the users list if I need more assistance. Thanks, all, for your dedication for this fine product -- As always! :)
