This is fixed in upstream prometheus-operator and will be vendored downstream with the next release.

All related PRs have been merged and OCP (master) now ships with prometheus-operator v0.43.0.

tested with 4.7.0-0.nightly-2020-11-05-010603, and followed steps in Comment 7
# oc -n openshift-monitoring logs -c prometheus prometheus-k8s-0 | grep -i "error creating"
no result

# oc -n openshift-monitoring logs -c prometheus prometheus-k8s-1 | grep -i "error creating"
no result
