  Size of logical volume rhel/root changed from 36.32 GiB (9298 extents) to 51.32 GiB (13138 extents).
  Logical volume rhel/root successfully resized.

[root@ps-um7-ogs-lin-7 ISO]# resize2fs /dev/mapper/rhel-root
resize2fs 1.44.3 (10-July-2018)
resize2fs: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/mapper/rhel-root
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.

[root@ps-um7-ogs-lin-7 ISO]# mount | grep rhel-root
/dev/mapper/rhel-root on / type xfs (rw,relatime,attr2,inode64,noquota)

[root@ps-um7-ogs-lin-7 ~]# df -Th

You did not specify your xfsprogs version, but older xfs_growfs requires the mount point as an argument, not the device:

SYNOPSIS
       xfs_growfs [ -dilnrx ] [ -D size ] [ -e rtextsize ] [ -L size ] [ -m maxpct ] [ -t mtab ] [ -R size ] mount-point

This was changed in later versions:

Please check your man page for proper usage of the utility.

If user wants to grow  LV together with fileysystem - there is support from 'lvm2' side with option '-r'
(or using the tool fsadm)

So user may use "lvextend -r -L+15G /dev/mapper/rhel-root"  and tooling will automatically
handle mounting and unmounting behind the scene.
