[ 3.821222] tpm tpm0: [Firmware Bug]: TPM interrupt not working, polling instead

Looking at relevant code in tpm_tis_core.c:
```
if (unlikely((status & TPM_STS_READ_ZERO) != 0)) {
        /*
         * If this trips, the chances are the read is
         * returning 0xff because the locality hasn't been
         * acquired.  Usually because tpm_try_get_ops() hasn't
         * been called before doing a TPM operation.
         */
        WARN_ONCE(1, "TPM returned invalid status\n");
        return 0;
}
```

This conditional block was committed 2020-10-01:
```
commit 55707d531af62bd87c1b7e8d66fd9798094f9b3b
Author: James Bottomley
Date:   Mon Sep 28 11:00:12 2020 -0700
    tpm_tis: Add a check for invalid status
    Some TIS based TPMs can return 0xff to status reads if the locality
    hasn't been properly requested.  Detect this condition by checking the
    bits that the TIS spec specifies must return zero are clear and return
    zero in that case.  Also drop a warning so the problem can be
    identified in the calling path and fixed (usually a missing
    try_get_ops()).
```

This means that the change was introduced in the 5.10 kernel. I'm not familiar with TPM at all, but I suspect this has been broken since forever on our devices, the only change being that this triggers a Warning in the kernel now. This is a bit unfortunate; I doubt most (99%) of users really care. But this warning in turn triggers crash reporting at every Feodra boot.

Comment 25 simon_jb+redhat 2021-02-12 09:10:44 UTC
Description of problem:
Occurs at boot.

May be unrelated, however; when used with the clevis + LUKS using following command:
"clevis luks bind -d /dev/xxx"
ERROR:esys:src/tss2-esys/esys_iutil.c:389:iesys_handle_to_tpm_handle() Error: Esys invalid ESAPI handle (40000001).
WARNING:esys:src/tss2-esys/esys_iutil.c:410:iesys_is_platform_handle() Convert handle from TPM2_RH to ESYS_TR, got: 0x40000001

The above error occurs.
For my purposes the TPM module functions as normal despite the errors.

For me adding tpm_tis.interrupts=0 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub and running "sudo grub2-mkconfig" fixed this problem.

Comment 58 John Apple II 2021-06-01 10:07:31 UTC
I've upgraded to the testing kernel 5.12.7-300. I don't see the TPM timeouts anymore with this one, and boot is much faster.

Note: I've had to keep dracut 053-4 instead of the newest dracut 054-12.git20210521 in stable. Any kernel built with the newer dracut version breaks dbus on boot for me and thus logind and NetworkManager, see bz #1965859).

Using the 5.12.17 and 5.12.18 it also fixes it for me.

What you say about NetworkManager rings a bell... I have been havng problems with VPN connections not retrying properly after a timeout f a long tme... I wonder what wll happen now, althhhgh I updated anything the standard Fedora software utility did show for update.

Comment 61 Ben Cotton 2021-11-04 13:56:49 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 33 is nearing its end of life.
Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 33 on 2021-11-30.
It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer
maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as EOL if it remains open with a
Fedora 'version' of '33'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version.

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were not
able to fix it before Fedora 33 is end of life. If you would still like
to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version
of Fedora, you are encouraged change the 'version' to a later Fedora
version prior this bug is closed as described in the policy above.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

Fedora 33 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2021-11-30. Fedora 33 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
