RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Hans de Goede 2021-01-11 13:52:27 UTC
We are working on supporting flickerfree boot in RHEL-8, see:
https://issues.redhat.com/browse/DESKTOP-342

The grub, kernel (bug 1878805) and plymouth (bug 1688935) side of this is in place now, so this is basically working if users opt-in to enabling the grub-hidden-menu featuere by calling:

"sudo grub2-editenv - set menu_auto_hide=1"

One thing which is not yet working is shutting-down or rebooting from directly within gdm (or from a user-session which has lasted less then 2 minutes). In this case the grub boot_success flag will not get set, so the grub menu will show on the next boot leading to an ugly / non-smooth boot experience.

In Fedora we have a small downstream (*) patch for this:
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/gnome-session/blob/master/f/0001-Fedora-Set-grub-boot-flags-on-shutdown-reboot.patch

It would be great if this patch can be added to the RHEL-8 gnome-session packages to to complete flicker-free boot support for RHEL-8.

*) Coming up with an upstream solution is still being worked on

fine with me

Comment 6 Michael Boisvert 2021-08-16 17:58:47 UTC
Verified on gnome-session-3.28.1-13.el8, but selinux-policy is preventing the functionality, see: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1994096
