Description of problem:

To improve image download time on a compute host at boot time, customer want to explore the option to download image directly from the compute nodes instead of nova having to pull the images from glance running on the OpenStack controllers. Detailed results of this analysis is available. They are noticing much faster image download time with this change. 

This idea of doing direct RBD download is not new. There is an active blueprint upstream which is still not merged. Here are the related links:
