Description Audrey Yeena Toskin 2021-01-21 05:19:44 UTC
I'm surprised there wasn't an automated notification about this via Anitya release-monitoring...

Announcement, detailing exciting improvement to engraving features:
https://musescore.org/en/3.6

The project's GitHub release page:
https://github.com/musescore/MuseScore/releases/tag/v3.6

I'm also a packager, so let me know if you need help testing or whatever :)

Hi Audrey. I appreciate your enthusiasm. :-) I'm quite excited for the new release of MuseScore myself. In spite of anitya's silence, I was aware of the new release, but there were a few hurdles to jump over first:

- There is a new bundled font, Petaluma, which had to be reviewed (bug 1918394)
- There was a question about the license of the new Edwin font (https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/legal@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/NRL5IQQ7CKNK32VPELJNC5VMRLE5X7I6/)
- GCC broke yesterday (https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/issue/9589)
- The new MuseScore release refused to build with Qt 5.15. It turns out that its refusal is based on bugs in 5.15.0 and 5.15.1. We have 5.15.2 in Fedora 33 and Rawhide, and it does not have the bugs in question, so I had to patch the MuseScore build system to force it to proceed anyway.

All of those hurdles have finally been cleared away this morning, so I pushed all the necessary changes to git and started a Rawhide build. If that succeeds, then I will build for Fedora 33 next.

Are you interested in comaintaining the mscore package? I'm always on the lookout for people who can help keep packages in good shape.

> Are you interested in comaintaining the mscore package?

Hmm, I *am* interested... But looking more closely at the package repo, how helpful I could be might more limited than I was originally thinking 😅. mscore looks surprisingly complicated, particularly with all the patch files. Does this come up often? I'm not really a programmer, so I wouldn't be able to help much if, say, there's ever a need to patch C++ files again.

Comment 4 Jerry James 2021-01-21 23:30:44 UTC
That's not necessarily an issue. This time around, for example, I was able to remove 2 patches (yay!). I did have to add 1, for the Qt issue, but that was a patch against a cmake file, not code.

A lot of the spec file complexity is to force MuseScore's fonts into a form that matches the Fedora font guidelines. If new fonts get added, it's just a matter of imitating what has been done with the other fonts.

Anyway, if you would like to give it a try, I'm willing. If I'm sleeping on the job, you can try updating to a new version and yell for help if you get stuck. If that sounds good to you, let me know your FAS account name and I'll add you as a comaintainer.

Okay, then, sure, you could add me as a co-maintainer. It'll be a learning experience, if nothing else :)
