Red Hat Satellite engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on Satellite to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs will be migrated starting at the end of May. If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "Satellite project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/SAT-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Jayant Bhatia 2021-01-23 17:41:40 UTC
Description of problem:

How reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:

Navigate to Satellite WebUI -> Hosts -> All Hosts -> Register Host. Keep 'Token lifetime' as '4' and all other fields empty. Click on 'Generate Command'. Copy the Generated Command on RHEL client machine and run it on client machine.

Actual results:

The client registration fails with below error:

~~~~~
Installed:
  katello-ca-consumer-dhcp130-237.gsslab.pnq2.redhat.com.noarch 0:1.0-1
Complete!
Error: Must specify an activation key
~~~~~

Expected results: If 'Activation Key' field has been kept empty, the Satellite WebUI should not generate the registration command and should throw an error or warning to fill in the 'Activation Key' because 'Activation Key' has been mentioned as one of the mandatory fields to be entered.

Additional info: We could have multiple customers who will keep the Activation Key option blank and will generate the command and will attempt to run it leading to the mentioned error. Then going back, filing up the 'Activation Key' option, generating the command again and running it again on client machines.

Comment 2 Marek Hulan 2021-01-29 14:05:54 UTC
Have you also tried setting the AK through host group? I think it's valid to use host group association and keep the field blank, but you're right that currently we need AK to be set somehow. This may change in next version though.

Comment 3 Marek Hulan 2021-01-29 14:08:54 UTC
In 6.9 time frame we may be able only to print such error as the first thing the scripts does, before any command is performed.

Comment 4 Jayant Bhatia 2021-02-02 02:57:02 UTC
Hello,

Thing works fine while using host group and AK mentioned in host group. The mentioned issue is for the scenario when host group is not used and AK is also left blank.

Comment 5 Leos Stejskal 2021-02-05 13:13:10 UTC
Hi,
the problem is that activation key is required only for RHEL & CentOS systems.
Other OSs (like Ubuntu & Fedora) don't need activation keys for registration.
I know that they are not supported, however they are not forbidden, so customers can register them.

Comment 6 Jayant Bhatia 2021-02-06 04:43:39 UTC
Hello,

Thanks.

In this scenario, a disclaimer or Info message will also help near "Activation Keys" option within "Satellite WebUI -> Hosts -> All Hosts -> Register Host". The Info message should state something like that Activation Key value is mandatory while Generating command for RHEL machines registration.

Comment 7 Stephen Wadeley 2021-02-11 08:21:53 UTC
Hello

Can we say this is an RFE then?

Thank you

Comment 8 Marek Hulan 2021-02-15 15:42:51 UTC
Makes sense, adding a keyword

Comment 9 Marek Hulan 2021-02-17 16:53:51 UTC
Realigning to 6.9, the AK in this version is required. In 6.10 we'll also allow inheriting this from HG and this becomes optional again. However the UI will better represent that.
