Comment 40 Ben Beasley 2022-03-22 13:41:51 UTC
I need this package as a dependency, and I’d like to offer a PR to help get it up to date. I can co-maintain too, if that is useful.

----

In addition to packaging the latest upstream release, I think it would be easier to maintain this package in the future if the spec file in Fedora were changed to drop single-spec-file compatibility with ancient Fedoras and the EPELs.

The minimal version of this would be to drop the conditionals for EPEL7. It’s unlikely to ever receive the latest version, and is responsible for a lot of cruft (manual Requires, Python 2, %{python3_pkgversion}).

Going a little farther, EPEL8 already lags Rawhide, and if it needs to be updated, it can always be done separately with just a little effort rather than having to rely on fast-forward merges to the epel8 branch from Rawhide.

Finally, if the Rawhide spec file doesn’t need to support EPEL8, then it can be migrated to pyproject-rpm-macros (“new guidelines”), which would eliminate manual BR’s and produce a very simple and concise spec file that could be used on Fedora and (if desired) EPEL9.

----

Please let me know what you think, and I’ll get started on the PR. Thanks!

I haven't had a chance to update it recently, and the current version has been working perfectly for me, so I haven't felt the urgency. If you need a newer version, please feel free to submit a PR. I can grab your username from the PR to add you as a co-maintainer. Thanks for helping!

I'm happy to drop the ancient Fedora support, and EPEL7, and any python2 cruft from the SPEC, but some people may feel strongly about EPEL8 or newer. Not me, but some people... maybe? If you can take a conservative approach, that'd be best, so changes are incremental and not making too many waves right away. But I'm not sure whether a conservative approach is compatible with the below suggestions. I'll defer to you. Feel free to make any changes you think best in the PR, and I promise to take a look.

I personally don't care about EPEL8, but I don't know who might.

I'm not familiar with these new guidelines. I'm not really a python person. I only maintain this project for the CLI keyring tool. So, as long as that doesn't break, I'm okay with updating the python bits to newer guidelines, if it is possible to do that.

Oh, whatever changes you do make, please make sure they work on F35 and later. I'm currently using F35, and can't really review any changes for rawhide/branched easily.

Comment 43 Ben Beasley 2022-03-22 18:25:59 UTC
Thanks for your response!

-----

Porting to pyproject-rpm-macros would work on all current Fedora releases plus EPEL9. That doesn’t mean the package would have to be removed from EPEL8. It just means that any work on updating the EPEL8 package would have to be done separately in the “epel8” branch, or at least would have to be cherry-picked, rather than just blindly fast-forward merging changes in from Rawhide. In practice, I’m not sure that EPEL8 will ever get any more updates unless there is a major CVE or something, since the changelog https://github.com/jaraco/keyring/compare/v21.5.0...v23.5.0 includes what seem to be some small breaking changes. This is therefor probably not much of a disadvantage. Plus, you can always email or CC me with questions about backporting changes to EPEL8 if it comes up.

On the other hand, updating the Fedora branches would be simpler because the pyproject-rpm-macros handle generating BuildRequires and file lists. Assuming you add me as a co-maintainer (FAS music), you can always email or CC me with any questions.

-----

Based on your feedback, I think it’s best if I start with a PR that updates to the latest version while cleaning up old cruft but preserving EPEL8 compatibility. This can be used as a starting point if the EPEL8 branch ever needs further attention.

Then, I’ll follow up with another PR for a pyproject-rpm-macros port.

Just for the record, I'm interested in having the package still working on EPEL 7 and 8 (unfortunately a dependency of nagstamon, which is not in the Fedora/EPEL repositories).

Note that updating the Fedora branches won’t break the EPEL7/8 branches. In fact, I’m willing to help maintain those branches, to the extent that any maintenance is required. For now I don’t see a reason to advocate for touching them, as there is some risk of incompatibility in updating, and there have been no bugs reported.

I ended up breaking this down even more, and starting with a PR that doesn’t update at all yet, but only drops the oldest legacy cruft from the spec file: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python-keyring/pull-request/10

Okay. I merged the PR to F35, F36, and rawhide and added you as a co-maintainer. I was going to push an update through bodhi for F35/F36, but realized it only drops cruft and doesn't update the version yet. So, although I created a tagged build in koji, I'm not going to create an update just yet, because it doesn't bump the version. I'll wait for that until the subsequent update that bumps the version.

Merged update to rawhide, but not updating (at least, not yet) for F35 and F36, due to bug 2069276 in poetry. See https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/python-keyring/pull-request/11 for discussion.
